I believe everyone should feel comfortable writing in English.  However, many non-native English students do not.  I have spent the last 16 years in the U.S., Bangladesh, Burma, and U.A.E trying to find opportunities to expand my skill base in composition and English teaching in order to find ways to help students feel comfort in writing.

I love to teach Composition and develop testing materials.  I feel that in order to understand a student’s ability appropriately, one should test him/her appropriately and measure that test with an appropriate rubric. Therefore, I am always adapting and accommodating my rubrics.  Some find it odd, but I find it comforting.

Further, unlike many writing teachers, I have no underlying desire to write.  My interest is in the reading of the writing of others.  I love to read.  No matter how busy I am, I am never too busy to read.  I feel the genre is not important.  It is the act of reading that matters.  It provides empathy with characters and interest with development.

Finally, I think travel and exposure to others is necessary to develop as a person.  If I do not travel, I will stagnate. I think ESL teaching and composition teaching are intrinsically intertwined.  Travel is also a component of those two areas because it is difficult to understand those from other cultures if one has never been uncomfortable or in an environment in which one is non-native.  I believe teaching is never done.
