The goal of Daemen College’s Psychology Department is to provide students with an understanding of the science behind human behavior, the tools to research the human mind, the skills to communicate effectively with other members of the scientific community, and the ability to apply the findings of research on human behavior to everyday living, functioning, and human dysfunction and disability.

Key Features

  • Exposure to a wide variety of content areas including Sensory and Perceptual Processes, Changes in behavior that occur over the Lifespan, Understanding Consciouness, Memory, Assessment, Mental Illness, Human Sexuality, and Health Psychology.
  • Flexibility in allowing students to choose elective courses in psychology and minor fields of study that meet their personal interests and professional goals.
  • Skill sets that are designed to make students marketable in a variety of professional fields both within and beyond the field of psychology, including careers in the human services professions, research professions, and opportunities in the business world.
  • Opportunities to gain hands-on, applied experience by completing field placements outside of the classroom at various community agencies, and by completing research projects on an assistantship basis with faculty in the department who are conducting innovative research projects.
  • Preparation for admission into competitive graduate school programs in a variety of disciplines both within the field of psychology (e.g., clinical, cognitive, neuroscience, social, and developmental psychology) and beyond (e.g., mental health counseling, law school, medical school, business school, social work, journalism and communications degrees).
  • Opportunities to take courses in a variety of areas of psychology that have become a prominent focus in the field in recent years, and are interdisciplinary in nature, such as cognititive psychology, social psychology, and neuroscience.
