Sigma Pi Epsilon Delta

The establishment of Sigma Pi Epsilon Delta first originated as a dream.  With that vision came much work and time dedicated to the formation of the honorary.  On January 24, 1977, Dr. Donald Stauffer formed the first Special Education Honorary in the United States at Slippery Rock University.  The constitution is based upon the belief that Special Educators who perform excellent work both academically and in service to persons with disabilities should be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the field of Special Education.  Through this honorary, the hope is to have learning and leadership qualities develop and continue the growth of Special Education.

The Purpose of the Organization

  1. Recognize the outstanding majors of the Department of Special Education, and to motivate the Special Education/Inclusion majors to continue their exceptional efforts.
  2. To sponsor programs which will provide a richer and deeper educational environment for the college community.
  3. Develop leadership qualities among the member of this honorary.

Our Moto

“Reach out and touch somebody’s hand.”  The important words are reach and touch.  It is our duty as Special Educators to extend ourselves to those who require our help and assistance.  This not only means as a teacher to a student but also as a model, counselor, and most important, as a friend.  The word “touch” is magic.  It does not mean we take our students’ hand and lead them everywhere; for then they will be follows.  It does mean we will be there to guide them and help them.  Whenever our special friends take that first step by themselves, we let them go knowing we have reached out and touched their lives.
