International First Year Experience

Adjusting to life as a college student can be an exciting, but sometimes overwhelming task. At Daemen we care deeply about the experiences our first year students have and we work hard to foster positive learning and living situations and to provide critical support for our new students.

Life as a College Student

Like many colleges we offer a wide range of services and opportunities for our first year students through Residence and Student Life. Becoming involved in positive activities on campus is crucial for personal wellness and growth. But, at Daemen we also take special care to address the transitions that take place for first year students in the classroom.

That’s why all first-year students take an Interdisciplinary Studies class – a theme-based multidisciplinary course generally taken during the first semester of the freshman year. It is designed to challenge students intellectually, build an appreciation for the core curriculum, initiate acquisition of essential competencies, introduce institutional and academic support services, and foster a sense of community throughout the campus. The course alternates between lecture and small-group discussion sections. A different theme, used to organize the content, is selected each year.

Unique Services

First-year students are also encouraged to participate in programs and events designed to aid them in their transition from high school to college, including the Peer Mentor Program, in which first-year students are paired with upper-level students who are available to provide advice on both academic and extracurricular concerns. A variety of workshops are also available throughout the year to assist students in such areas as study skills, time management, test-taking strategies, and clarifying academic and career goals.

"I think one of the most crucial aspects of the Daemen curriculum is the required internship. I was an accounting intern for both a private health care company and a certified public accounting firm. I was able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real business situations. When my internships were over, each company offered me a full-time position."
