Chris Johnson

Sports Management - Recent Daemen Graduate

Chris knew how important networking would be to his future in the sport management profession. He chose Daemen because he knew the small classes would allow him to form close relationships with his professors, all of whom are well-connected professionals in the sport management field. Johnson actively sought out hands-on experience on campus and off, pursuing internship opportunities, gaining knowledge of the field, and preparing himself for his career.

Would you recommend the Business Administration - Sport Management program to others?

Absolutely, it is a great program. Since it is a part of the business department and is essentially a business degree, students are able to gain an essential combination of business knowledge and first-hand experience. This gives them more of a chance to secure a job after graduation, which is important during these tough economic times.

What do you like best about the program?

In my opinion, the professors are the best part of the program. At Daemen, students are taught by experienced sport management professionals who are well-connected within the athletic community. This is very important in a field where networking is crucial to success.

Why did you choose Daemen?

I chose Daemen because it was a small, intimate campus coupled with a very personal, homelike atmosphere. Everyone I spoke to had nothing but great things to say about the campus community and the school itself.

Do you have any advice for prospective students entering your program?

The best advice I can give to prospective students is to get involved. Join one of the many clubs in the business department and participate. Also, get as much experience as you can within the field. There is no better way to learn about the field of sport management than through first-hand experience. Whether it is interning or simply volunteering, start early and do it often.

Did you have an internship during your time at Daemen? Where?

Yes, I interned with the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and with the Buffalo Bills Alumni Association.

Were you involved in any activities at Daemen?

I was a member of the Daemen Men’s Soccer Team. The best part about this is that it gave me an opportunity to travel around the country and represent the college. It was definitely a rewarding experience.

What was your favorite experience at Daemen?

My favorite experience at Daemen was witnessing my personal growth. For example, I went from someone who was deathly afraid of speaking in public to a frequent participant in open house events and student discussion panels in front of hundreds of people. Daemen was instrumental in me helping me to become the person I am today.

What will be your lasting memory of Daemen?

Daemen was a place where I grew a great deal both academically and personally. The relationships I’ve made with the friends I’ve met there are something I will take with me wherever my future brings me.
