Welcome to the Office of Assessment

Daemen College aims to prepare students for life and leadership through innovative academic and co-curricular experiences.  To enhance educational offerings using information-based decision making, Daemen faculty and staff engage in ongoing assessment of all programs and services.

The Office of Assessment is available to assist in the development of lean, useful and sustainable assessment initiatives that support and inform the work we value most.

Assessment findings may be used for external reporting and accountability to various stakeholders, but the primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning and institutional effectiveness.

Three overlapping categories of assessment at Daemen include:

1) Assessment of Academic Departments and Administrative Units

2) Assessment of the Core Curriculum

3) Assessment of Institutional Effectiveness.  

Assessment of Academic Departments includes investigations of student learning in both academic and co-curricular programs.  An ongoing, 5 step assessment process, (with the acronym ACRRU) includes the following steps: 1) Articulate Learning Objectives, 2) Collect Information, 3) Review Findings, 4) Report Results, and 5) Use the information for Improvement.  (Repeat).  Academic Departments also participate in an Academic Program Review process through the Education Policy Committee on a five year cycle.  Assessment of Administrative Units includes assessment of progress on unit goals and the effectiveness of programs and services.

Assessment of the Core Curriculum, under the leadership of the Core Director and the Core Assessment Committee, involves ongoing inquiry about student achievement of the seven Core Competencies and other Core requirements.  The Core competencies include: Critical thinking, Communication, Information Literacy, Civic Responsibility, Contextual Understanding, Affective Awareness and Moral & Ethical Discernment.  Core assessment also addresses the other outcomes of Core offerings including learning communities, service learning, quantitative literacy, writing intensive, and research & presentation courses.

Assessment of Institutional Effectiveness is the overarching plan for and process of using information for planning, decision making and improvement in all areas of the college.   Institutional effectiveness involves aligning the goals of individual units with the college mission and strategic plan.
