Empowering Students Toward Independence
This session will focus on ways students might empower themselves toward independence and self-advocacy. Developing improved decision-making processes is a journey that requires us to commit and be willing to change patterns of behavior. The presentation is inspired by a recent student's transformational process from her self-perception as a victim toward herself as an empowered, self-directed adult. The presenters will also address the oft-neglected feelings associated with the hard work and courage it takes to become aware of disempowering habits and making the choice to change them.

Survival Tips for Night Owls Living in an Early Bird World
Have you tried to change your night owl ways but have found getting up for class is not as easy as going to bed earlier and getting up earlier? Do you get a second wind and feel most productive when everyone else is going to bed? Research suggests Night Owls and Early Birds may differ on many levels such as their personality, learning preferences and perhaps even their genes! Experts say that you CAN in fact change your circadian preference (Night vs. Morning preference) with a few key steps. A self proclaimed Night Owl will share what she discovered while researching this very issue! If you are a Night Owl yearning to become a chipper Early Bird, or an Early Bird who wishes you better understood your late-rising, grumpy-in-the-morning roommate, this presentation is for you!

Stand Up, Stand Out: WNY Student Leadership Conference 2012 (LEAP Academy Approved)
With Leadership Keynote Speaker: Ed Gerety
Ed Gerety is one of the top professional youth speakers and leadership trainers in the United States. He has spoken to audiences in all 50 states, Canada, and Europe reaching over one million people and counting. Ed is recognized for his unique ability to connect with audiences about real issues. Through his personal experiences, humor, and insights Ed teaches the principles and skills that are essential to the development of leaders. His powerful programs leave a lasting impact. Ed is the author of Combinations: Opening the Door to Student Leadership and a contributing author of four books on leadership and personal development. The National Speakers Association awarded Ed their highest earned designation, Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), an honor held by less than 10% of speakers who belong to the International Federation of Professional Speakers. All undergraduate and graduate students from universities and colleges in Western New York are eligible to attend this conference, which in addition to Gerety’s keynote, will offer a variety of break-out sessions on developing leadership skills and an overall understanding of leadership.

CREATING SAFER SCHOOLS FEATURING TINA OWENS
Following the tragic loss of Jamie Rodemeyer and other young people, Daemen College will be hosting a special speaker to talk about what we can do as peers, teachers, and administrators to create safer schools where all students can feel safe and have a voice.
Tina Owen is the founder and Lead Teacher at The Alliance School, the first school in the nation to start with a mission of reducing bullying. It was also the first to start a gay-friendly middle school. The Alliance School has been featured in major news programs and magazines such as 20/20, Time Magazine, People Magazine, and U.S. News and World Report. Additionally, the school has been the focus of international news programs from France and the Netherlands.

Workshop: Restorative Justice and Peacemaking Circles
Tina Owen will lead a workshop on how to lead and implement peacemaking circles as a strategy for building community and resolving conflict. Participants will experience a mock restorative justice circle and have an opportunity following the circle experience to ask questions about the process.
