Nancy Haberman Gacioch 62 Addresses Daemen College Class of 2012

Nancy Haberman Gacioch ’62

Nancy Haberman Gacioch 62, philanthropist, strong supporter of many Buffalo and Western New York charitable organizations; business owner; former teacher, and a member of the Daemen College Board of Trustees for six years (2005 to 2011), spoke to members of the Daemen Class of 2012, telling them to follow their passions.

In her Commencement remarks to the Class of 2012, Gacioch told the graduates that each of them Has within you the same essence of a life well-lived as I do. Follow your heart, and never give up on the passions that fuel your heart.

Even when you think your passions may be thwarted, never, ever give up. You are facing a very different world than I did when I graduated 50 years ago from Rosary Hill College. It is a world filled with many more complications and many more challenges. But within your heartfelt passions, you hold the key. The only person who can hold you back is you.

The College awarded four special honors at Commencement

Kevin A. Gill, a Buffalo resident who graduated with a degree in Business Administration-Sports Management, received the Colleges most prestigious academic honor, the Charles Lumsden Award, for maintaining a 3.99 grade-point-average throughout his undergraduate years.

Alyssa Marie Crane, a Visual Arts Education major from Lancaster, NY, received the 2012 Presidents Award. The award goes to the student who has demonstrated an outstanding record of leadership and involvement in the College community.

The Mary Angela Canavan Award, named for the second president of the College, is presented to the student who best exemplifies a dedication to and enthusiasm for campus life. The 2012 award was presented to Rebecca Buttaccio, from West Seneca, NY. Rebecca received a BS/MS in Health Sciences/Physician Assistant Studies.

The Daemen College Alumni Senior Award, given by the Daemen College/Rosary Hill Alumni Association, went to Sarah Hartman, a Psychology major, from Oakfield, NY. The award recognizes an outstanding graduating senior who has made a significant contribution to the College.

Additionally, Daemen College will have 13 veterans among the 2012 graduates 1.5% of the class. They will be receiving degrees ranging from Bachelors to Doctorates. To this point, this will make the largest group of veterans in a graduating class from Daemen College.

About Nancy Haberman Gacioch

Nancy Haberman Gacioch studied social studies and economics at the former Rosary Hill College, now Daemen College. Believing that there ought to be a significant incentive for women in the area of business entrepreneurship, she generously provided the support to start and maintain the Daemen College Interdisciplinary Minor in Entrepreneurship, and an accompanying entrepreneurial lecture series at Daemen in her name. Gacioch also provided funding for a new scholarship, the Nancy Haberman Gacioch Endowed Scholarship for Women, which is needs-based and primarily for WNY residents.

I believe it is important for there to be a significant incentive for women, especially, in the area of business entrepreneurship, Gacioch has said. The lecture series is now helping women in the program to learn first hand the experiences of building a business; how to achieve success; along with tuition assistance and other program financing needs.

Nancy Haberman Gacioch and her husband, Bill, are widely known for their philanthropy in Buffalo and Erie County. Their great success in creating a business employing 300 people and providing housing for over 20,000 tenants around the country has enabled them to make a significant difference in the lives of many residents of Buffalo and Western New York. National Property Management Associates (NPMA), now headquartered in Orchard Park, was founded more than 45 years ago.
