SERVICE LEARNING
Service Learning Program
Coordinator: Susan Marchione
The Service
Learning program at Daemen educates students through a variety of opportunities
in the local community, nationally, and internationally. All Daemen students
fulfill a three-credit hour Service Learning requirement, and many choose to
volunteer additional service in the community. Students at all class levels
participate as individuals or groups in short-term and long-term projects or
assignments working with people in need. Daemen College has been recognized
with various awards, including the Points of Light National Service Award.
Placements in a wide variety of community settings are available throughout the
academic year, with service learning travel opportunities typically taking
place during intersemester and spring break. Daemen College is a founding
member of the Western New York Service Learning Coalition, developed to
coordinate and more effectively deliver service learning opportunities among all
member institutions of higher education and community organizations seeking
service learners.
Through
integrated community service and active learning, and group processing of one’s
experiences, students enhance constructive thinking and value formation.
Service Learning also affords powerful application of classroom experiences.
The benefits of Service Learning include hands-on experiences; engagement in
peer bonding; development of leadership qualities, responsibility and
commitment; opportunity to connect one’s education with the world at large, and
the opportunity to assist and learn from others.
