Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

Essential Courses

Students must demonstrate proficiency in a second modern language at the intermediate level by completing a sequence of intermediate level coursework or by passing an approved proficiency exam.  Students with no previous background in a second language and who plan to spend the junior year abroad are encouraged to take second language courses in the freshman or sophomore years.

All Modern Language majors are required to take CMP 311 Advanced Composition as part of their degree requirements.

All majors are required to complete an international experience in a country where the major language is the official language.  Junior year is the preferred time and options are: one long-term experience (minimum of one semester but preferably one year) or two short-term experiences Intersemester and/or Summer terms), the combination of which must total a minimum of seven weeks of experience.

Most such programs will require a minimum GPA of 3.0 in language courses.  Spanish majors attend a Daemen program in Spain, Argentina, Cuba, or Mexico, or another university abroad approved by the department.  Courses taken abroad must be approved by the Modern Language Department.  Official transcripts from universities abroad must be sent directly by the University to the Registrar’s Office at Daemen College.  The program for the senior year is subject to what courses have been taken in the foreign university.
