Why Study Spanish?

You might think that studying Spanish is something college students do if they want to be Spanish teachers. And you're right! Who else might want to study Spanish?

  • Future Social Workers.
  • Anyone interested in International Trade or Banking.
  • Students hoping for a career in Law or Law Enforcement.
  • Elementary or Special Education teachers who expect to work with Latino children and their parents.
  • Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists or Nurse Practitioners who need to communicate with Latino patients.
  • Students of Social Work or Psychology who plan on going into counseling.
  • Business leaders interested in reaching the 12 million-strong Spanish-speaking market in the US - or the 400 million in Latin America.

You don't have to be a Spanish major to study Spanish at Daemen College. In the last year, Spanish Conversation, Grammar and Literature classes have included majors in History & Government, Elementary and Special Education, Accounting, International Business, Physical Therapy, Biology, Social Work, Art and Physician Assistant.

If you have a strong high school background in Spanish, speak Spanish at home or have extensive experience in a Spanish-speaking country, you may be eligible for placement in upper level courses. Daemen College offers some great options for study in Spanish speaking countries! Daemen College is affiliated with the Center for Cross-Cultural Study in Seville, Spain. Students may opt for a program for the academic year, the fall or spring semester, the January term, the January term plus the spring semester or for one or two four-week sessions in the summer. In recent years Daemen students have tried all of these options and the student response has been unanimously positive. Seville is one of Spain's most beautiful cities, combining the rich traditions of Roman, Muslim and Christian Spain. It is also a fabulous modern city. Classes at the Center are small and cover all aspects of the language, literature, history and culture of Spain. Professionally relevant courses are offered as well. Visit the web site for more information! The Center also offers programs in Havana, Cuba which are currently on hold due to changes in US government policy. Check with the website for updates. And in Fall 2005 the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies will inaugurate a program in Argentina?

Daemen is partnered with two great Mexican Universities. Universidad LaSalle in Mexico City and Universidad de Guanajuato offer a full range of academic courses as well as Spanish language acquisition courses for foreigners. Check out the websites and decide if the incredible vitality of Mexico City with its museums, parks, shops, cathedrals and clubs is for you as you study at LaSalle Universidad LaSalle or you might prefer the smaller historic city of Guanajuato which offers a Seventeenth Century colonial atmosphere combined with Twenty First Century modernity. Living in a Spanish speaking country gives students the opportunity to experience the culture, see how business is transacted, know the people, learn to use the language in a variety of situations and refine their fluency. In most cases, (with the addition of air fare and spending money) study abroad is similar in cost to Daemen tuition. Some scholarship money is available for study abroad and students are urged to check with Financial Aid to determine what additional funds they can use to finance this very important aspect of their college years.
