CORE CURRICULUM

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign Language Department

Chairperson: Associate Professor Mills

Faculty: Associate Professor Telford,

Assistant Professor Fiori

Degrees Offered:

Bachelor of Arts in French

Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

B.A. FRENCH

Essential Courses:

Students must demonstrate proficiency in a second foreign language at the intermediate level by passing an approved proficiency exam.  Depending upon any previous preparation in a second foreign language, a sequence of course work may be recommended.  Students with no previous background in a second language and who plan to spend the junior year abroad are encouraged to take second language courses in the freshman or sophomore years.

All Foreign Language majors are required to take CMP 311 Advanced Composition as part of their degree requirements.

All majors are required to complete an international experience in a country where the major language is the official language. Junior year is the preferred time and options are: one long-term experience (minimum of one semester but preferably one year) or two short-term experiences (Intersemester and/or Summer terms), the combination of which must total a minimum of seven weeks of experience.

Most such programs will require a minimum GPA of 3.0 in language courses.  French majors usually attend an approved program in France or Quebec.  The program is determined by offerings at the University in conjunction with courses offered at Daemen College.  There is a certain amount of flexibility in the choosing of the courses.  Courses taken abroad must be approved by the Foreign Languages Department.  Official transcripts from universities abroad must be sent directly by the University to the Registrar’s Office at Daemen College.  The program for the senior year is subject to what courses have been taken in the foreign university.
