Study Abroad Opportunities

As an institutional member of CIEL, Daemen College shares resources with other member colleges. One of these resources is study abroad opportunities. Below is a list of the member institutions and the study abroad opportunities offered by each. Please note that some programs have specific requirements, such as language proficiency, or limited availability. Please contact Dr. Denise Mills at dmills@daemen.edu for eligibility requirements.

I. Daemen College

Descriptions/Partners:
Spain: Daemen College is affiliated with The Center for Cross-Cultural Study in Seville, Spain. Students may opt for a program for the academic year, the fall or spring semester, the January term, the January term plus the spring semester or for one or two four-week sessions in the summer. The Center also offers programs in Córdoba, Argentina for summer & semester study and in Havana, Cuba. The Cuba program is currently on hold due to changes in US government policy. Mexico & Canada:
Daemen is a partner in an exchange program that engages faculty and students from universities in North America, which offers students one-semester or full-year exchanges at partner institutions. Daemen is partnered with Universidad LaSalle in Mexico City and Universidad de Guanajuato, which both offer a full range of academic courses as well as Spanish language acquisition courses for foreigners.Students may also study in Canada in St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and the University of Northern British Columbia. Biotechnology in Healthcare:
Daemen is in a consortium with Pitzer College (Claremont , CA), New College of Florida, (Sarasota, FL), Athlone Institute of Technology, (Athlone, Ireland), Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, University of Trier (Birkenfeld, Germany), and Central Ostrobothnia Polytechnic (Kokkola, Finland).

The consortium offers one-semester international exchanges of science students. The program will educate students in aspects of biotechnology related to healthcare, specifically wound care research, and help prepare students in the health care professions to better address pressing health needs that require interdisciplinary team approaches and are global in scope. This program has been awarded supported from the Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education. For more information, contact   kmurphy@daemen.edu.

Daemen Students without Borders:
Each year during spring break, a number of Daemen students participate in service-learning projects abroad in places like the Dominican Republic. For more information about service-oriented opportunities abroad, contact Service-Learning at jsankoh@daemen.edu.

A. Semester Programs: Students may choose from Hampshire programs in Central America, China, Cuba, India, and many other locations through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). These programs are coordinated by Hampshire faculty and staff who are experts on the respective countries and intimately knowledgeable about Hampshire's educational philosophy and its divisional requirements.

France:
Hampshire College participates in an exchange under a joint agreement with Mount Holyoke at Institut d'Etudes Politiques ("Sciences Po"), Paris, France. < www.sciences-po.fr > The exchange is open to qualified students, however, it is based on a balance of exchange.

South Africa:

School for International Training SIT College Semester Abroad is the largest and most comprehensive academic program of its kind in the world. Providing a rich academic and intercultural experience is at the center of SIT's mission to prepare a generation of leaders for important roles in a world drawn closer by the currents of political change, commerce, and technology-with the realization that increased global interdependence carries with it a call for greater understanding and effectiveness in a complex variety of cultures.

Study Abroad Database The Online Study Abroad Directory (OSAD) is a service of The International Study and Travel Center (ISTC), a not-for-profit student organization at the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities.

Duke in the Andes Duke in cooperation with the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés and the Universidad Católica Boliviana offer an exciting program in La Paz, Bolivia. Students are required to take two core courses offered by Duke and two course from the regular offerings at either of the partner institutions. Bolivian students from both universities are allowed and encouraged to enroll in the Duke courses. All courses are taught in Spanish, therefore, a certain level of Spanish proficiency is required.

There will also be opportunities to expand your knowledge of Bolivian cultures and lifestyle beyond the classroom. In the past, students have studied native instruments and dance or chosen to perform community service projects in and around La Paz. Kalamazoo College

THAILAND:
Sustainable Development Studies Local Responses Within a Global Context Sustainable Development Studies, is an academically challenging experiential learning program focused on the questions surrounding what "sustainability" means in a globalized world. Rigorous classroom study and seminars are coupled with experiential "field based" learning opportunities with NGOs, synthesizing readings, courses and experiences. Studio Art Center International (SACI):
SACI was founded in 1975 to create a complete program in Florence for students seeking excellence in studio art and liberal arts instruction at the United States university level. The school provides a stimulating educational experience that draws upon the rich cultural resources of both past and present Italy in its own well-equipped facilities, which are located a few steps from Michelangelo's Medici Chapel, the Laurentian Library, Fra Angelico's masterpieces in San Marco, and the bustling activity of Florence's central market. Studio Art Centers International is recognized as one of the leading overseas institutions in the areas of studio art, art history, art conservation and Italian language and culture. SACI is a solid program for concentrators in studio art, photography, art history and design (graphic and/or architecture) to have a semester or year abroad. A. Formal student exchange: These exchange programs let you spend a semester or a year studying abroad at one of 6 partner universities.

University College Chester, Chester, England:
University College Chester enrolls about 4,000 students, and is located in the ancient city of Chester, about 25 miles from Liverpool. The College offers a wide range of programs in education and the liberal arts. Alverno education students may complete one of their required field placements in a local elementary or secondary school. Chester's Web site is http://www.chester.ac.uk.

London Metropolitan University, London, England:
London Metropolitan offers students the excitement and diversity of living in one of the world's greatest cities. International students may choose from an exceptionally full range of subjects, including education, business and management, the arts, the sciences and the social sciences. Kansai Gaidai University Osaka, Japan:
The Asian Studies program at Kansai Gaidai is one of the best opportunities for English-speaking students to study Japanese language and culture. All students are required to take a five-credit course in spoken Japanese and a three-credit course in written Japanese. They are then free to choose from a wide selection of courses (taught in English) dealing with Japanese arts, culture, society, business, and international affairs. The University of Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico:
The University of Guanajuato, located in a beautiful mountain city, offers a broad selection of courses on Mexican life and society, as well as traditional subjects in the sciences and liberal arts. Spanish is the language of instruction. In addition to its regular courses, the University also operates a well-known institute for the study of Spanish. Students come from around the world to study Spanish at Guanajuato.

Liverpool Hope University College, Liverpool, England:
Liverpool Hope University College offers the student especially strong areas of study in education, the humanities and social sciences, and in biological and environmental sciences. Located in a tree-lined residential area of Liverpool, Liverpool Hope has access to all of the excitement of a major international port city, while retaining a warm and relaxed campus atmosphere. Institut de Preparation a L'administration et La Gestion, Nice, France:
IPAG Nice, as it is usually called, is located on the French Riviera in the beautiful city of Nice. While many of the students at IPAG Nice are French nationals, the college draws students from all over Europe. The primary language of instruction is French, but there are many classes taught in English. Students will have the opportunity to take classes in French language in addition to those in international business.

B. Direct Enrollment in Foreign Universities Alverno's International & Intercultural Center has established contacts with a number of foreign universities and will assist those students who wish to study at one of these schools. In many cases, Alverno staff members have visited these campuses and met with the administrators who coordinate the international visiting student programs. In recent years, Alverno students have enrolled directly in universities in Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Austria and Spain.

A. External Studies: The curriculum integrates traditional classroom instruction with experiential opportunities that lead to an understanding of different cultural perspectives through firsthand interactions with host cultures.

B. International Exchanges: In 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, Pitzer College has funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to facilitate parallel courses as a feature of “Mellon Exchanges," through which exchanged students from Pitzer and the host institution enroll in a specially designed course taught by Pitzer faculty and faculty of the host institution.

Australia -- The University of Adelaide:

England -- University of Bristol:
Located one-and-a-half hours out of London by train, Bristol offers a wide range of coursework. A Mellon Grant collaborative course on Marx: A Transatlantic Seminar is required for all Mellon exchange participants. University of Birmingham:
At the heart of England’s industrial belt in the city of Birmingham, the University of Birmingham offers a wide selection of courses in Arts, Languages, Literature, History, Multidisciplinary Programs, Business and Commerce, Social Sciences, Government and Politics, Engineering, and Health Sciences. Germany -- Universität Koblenz-Landau (Campus Landau):
Situated in the historic city of Landau in southeastern Germany, the University of Koblenz-Landau offers classes in English in disciplines including English Literature, Cultural Studies, and Linguistics. Students can take German language classes at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Additionally courses are offered in German to students with appropriate levels of language competence. Mellon exchange students should enroll in the collaboratively taught course on Shakespeare's Mature Tragedies. Mexico -- Autonomous University of the Yucatan:
The Autonomous University of the Yucatan in Merida offers a wide range of coursework in Spanish with Mexican students, giving occasion for a high level of cross-cultural interaction and collaborative work. Pitzer students need to be fluent in Spanish to qualify (minimum of four semesters of Spanish or its advanced equivalent.) A Mellon collaborative course on Media, Culture, and Identity is required for all Mellon exchange participants. South Africa -- University of KwaZulu Natal:
Special courses are available in Zulu language, Cultural Studies, and Media Studies. The University of KwaZulu Natal offers a unique slice of the diversity of South Africa for a student of culture. Within a square mile one is likely to meet South African Indians, Afrikaners, Xhosas, Zulus, San, Sothos, Ndebeles and English-speaking peoples. A Mellon Grant collaborative course on The New African Movement is required for all Mellon exchange participants. University dormitory accommodation is offered. www.nu.ac.za

Spain -- University of Seville:
Pitzer Exchange in Spain is coordinated through the Geranios Language Institute in Dos Hermanos, twenty minutes outside of Seville. The Geranios Language Institute offers Spanish language for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. Beginning language students will take the equivalent of three courses in Spanish and one course in Spanish culture. Students with intermediate and advanced Spanish skills may enroll in an intensive language class for three weeks and then enroll in regular courses at the University of Seville. Students live in homestays while participating in the language institute program and university students typically live in university-arranged accommodation which may consist of home stays or dormitory living, depending on availability. The Geranios Language Institute organizes study trips to the city of Seville and neighboring cities and regions. Thailand -- Payap University:
Through the Thai and Southeast Asian Studies program at Payap University in Chiang Mai, students take courses in Thai language and culture as well as electives, such as Art History, Thai Dance and Drama, Thai Literature, Modern Thai History, Major Southeast Asian Religions, Buddhism, Sustainable Development, Women's Issues/Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, and Ethnic Studies. Turkey -- Middle East Technical University (METU)
METU is an ideal choice for natural science students who want to explore a new culture while maintaining a competitive standing in their major. Pitzer operates the program in cooperation with the prestigious Middle East Technical University, where our students can select from hundreds of courses taught in English that they attend together with their Turkish peers. Combined with Pitzer's cultural immersion model, through which students can study Turkish while staying with a turkish family, live in METU residence halls with Turkish students, and study Turkish culture, participants get the best of all possible worlds: a rich investigation of a fascinating culture at the crossroads of European and Middle Eastern civilizations as well as a first-rate education in any major. www.metu.edu.tr/

Pitzer College in Italy:
Pitzer College in Italy places students in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region in the towns of Parma and Modena. Home to Verdi, Toscanini, the country's oldest university and Europe's finest Romanesque cathedral, the two cities offer a vital, friendly and authentic Italian setting off the tourist track yet within access of Milan and Florence. The program allows students to rapidly develop their language skills and arrive at a more profound understanding of Italian culture through an interdisciplinary core course while pursuing directed independent study in areas of academic interest.

Pitzer Summer Study in Japan:
Pitzer's Summer Study Program in Japan gives students a chance to participate in a unique exchange agreement between Pitzer College and Shukugawa College in Nishinomiya, Japan. The one-month program in Japan consists of language classes, demonstrations and lectures on Japanese culture, field trips to places of economic, political, cultural and historical interest, and stays with Japanese families. Students may choose to combine an independent research project with the experience in Japan to earn two credits.

In addition to the choices given above, a limited number of students can be approved to attend programs administered by other institutions and organizations. Students must demonstrate strong fit for these non-Pitzer programs with their overall educational plan at Pitzer. Pitzer approves programs that demonstrate a commitment to intercultural and language education. A list of these programs is available through the Office of External Studies. Students whose academic needs cannot be met by one of the options listed above may petition the External Studies Committee for permission to attend other appropriate programs.

Pitzer Summer Health Program in Costa Rica:
Pitzer's Summer Health Program in Costa Rica provides participants with an opportunity for a Spanish-speaking, cultural immersion experience and a first-hand look at healthcare in Latin America. The six-week program, held in early summer, is ideal for students who can't fit a semester abroad into their schedules. The integrated curriculum combines intensive Spanish language study and family stays with health-related internships and a core course focused on health issues in Costa Rica.

Several excursions help students gain a broader perspective on health and environmental issues. Professor Ann Stromberg in sociology serves as faculty director.

Pitzer College in Ontario:
Pitzer College in Ontario taps into the economic, social, and ethnic diversity of one of the oldest communities in Southern California. The program exposes students to the challenges facing America's major cities and provides students an opportunity to explore strategies of urban transformation. Students participate in internships and community service projects in close cooperation with the local government while attending an innovative interdisciplinary urban studies course that wrestles with the complexities of contemporary urban life. The program exposes students to a variety of community-based research methods employed in a semester long internship. Students remain in residence at Pitzer College while participating on this program.

Pitzer College in Nepal/Darjeeling, India:
Pitzer College in Nepal/Darjeeling, India is the college's longest-running program and has gained recognition for its highly effective approach to language and cultural training. An intellectually and physically demanding schedule blends family stays, language classes, lectures, field trips, community projects, and independent study.

Extended visits to different regions of the country, including a trek and stay in a Himalayan village, allow participants to learn first-hand about this small nation's surprising wealth of cultures and climates. The integrated curriculum enables students to interact more closely with the people and cultures of Nepal. In semesters when the program cannot be offered in Nepal, it is offered in Darjeeling, India, a culturally and linguistically Nepali region of the State of Bengal.

Pitzer College in Ecuador:
Intensive Language and Culture
Pitzer College in Ecuador: Intensive Language and Culture is designed for students at all language levels who want to develop their Spanish skills while participating fully in Ecuadorian life and culture. Intensive language (four hours a day), Spanish speaking homestays, community service internships in Spanish and a program commitment to speaking as much Spanish as possible provide for optimal language learning. A core course on Ecuadorian life and culture provides students with an important cultural and historical context for their personal experience in the culture. Several extended study trips enhance the curriculum and introduce students to Ecuador's cultural and ecological diversity while a directed independent study project allows students to explore one topic of interest in depth during the last month of the program. Contemporary indigenous issues are looked at closely during the semester through homestays with Otavalan highland indian families and a special study trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu.

Pitzer College in Ecuador:
University-based is based in Quito

Pitzer College in Ecuador: University-based is based in Quito, one of the most spectacular cities in South America. The program involves students in Ecuadorian life and culture and helps them understand what it means to be an Ecuadorian student, family member or citizen. The curriculum features a Seminar on Poverty and Development, courses at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and work with a community organization as well as excursions to the Amazon rainforest, and the rural community of Cayambe. All program courses and activities are conducted in Spanish. Students live with Ecuadorian families in the suburbs of Quito, providing a unique opportunity to explore the richness and complexity of urban life.

Pitzer College in Botswana:
Pitzer College in Botswana offers students an in-depth, cross-cultural learning experience organized around a challenging schedule of language training in Setswana, field projects, and a core course on Botswana and regional development. Students live with host families and have the opportunity to pursue independent research and internships. Botswana is one of Africa's most economically successful and politically stable countries. This "African Miracle" is home to 1.5 million people inhabiting 226,900 square miles of vast savannas, the Kalahari Desert, and beautiful national wildlife parks. Botswana's citizens enjoy standards of health, education, and economic well-being rivaled on the continent only by neighboring South Africa.

Programs: The most cost-effective programs are offered by the University of South Florida and National Student Exchange. Bright Futures Scholarships apply to both, and USF charges Florida in-state tuition even to out-of-students. The University of South Florida offers summer term, fall/spring semester, and international experiential learning.
