Center for Sustainable Communities & Civic Engagement

The Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement at Daemen College (The CSCCE) was formally established in Fall 2001 through a grant of $600,000 from The John R. Oishei Foundation. The Daemen CSCCE works strategically to support community-based organizations to make changes that improve the lives of residents in low-income neighborhoods. As an intermediary, the Center works with the leadership of community-based organizations to make changes that improve the lives of residents in low-income neighborhoods.

As a provider of direct services, the Center facilitates the placement of Daemen students into service-learning positions that meet community-identified needs. Services are provided in Seneca Babcock, the West Side, and the Fruit Belt. Daemen students have the opportunity to be engaged in rewarding service and learn hands-on skills that prepare them for their careers.

The Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement and its projects have been awarded grants and support from The John R. Oishei Foundation. Fannie Mae, Western & Central New York Partnership Office, KeyBank USA, The Junior League of Buffalo, The Children’s Foundation of Buffalo and Erie County, The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, The Josephine Goodyear Foundation, The Bettina Weary Trust, The M & T Charitable Foundation, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, The Providence Fund, Computers for Children, Inc., and New York Campus Compact. In addition, through the efforts of Congressman Thomas Reynolds, Daemen College was awarded a Special Project grant of $327,360 through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. A significant portion of the grant has funded renovation costs for a collaborative partnership between Daemen’s Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement, The Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs at Daemen College, and The St. John Baptist Church, and Great Strides Early Childhood Center, housed in the Reverend Dr. Bennett W. Smith Sr. Family Life Center.
