How to prepare for a College Fair

Yes, some of college fairs can feel like a cattle call, with large groups of students and parents lumbering from one booth to the next without any real direction, but if you take a few steps to prepare beforehand, you’ll be ahead of the crowd – literally – and be able to make the most out of your time at the next fair you attend.

Most of the time, you’ll be able to look at which schools will be represented before the fair starts – for College Night at Daemen, you can look here – so you can choose which schools you think you would like to see beforehand. Bring a list of questions you want to ask - about the college’s strengths, the admissions requirements, financial aid, etc. Usually, the admissions representative will want you to sign in or fill out a contact card. If you print up labels with your name, home address, and e-mail address ahead of time, you’ll be able to save lots of time by simply handing them a sticker.

Once you get to the fair, pick up a directory when you walk in. This will show you where the college booths are located and it will enable you to map out your path at the fair. Circle or star the colleges you’re interested in and you’ll be able to move around the fair with a purpose. When you get to the booth to talk to the admissions representative, ask your questions and take notes. Ask about the programs that you’re interested in, and take note of anything that distinguishes that college from the hundreds of others in the room. If you want to stay in touch with the admissions representative, make sure you get his or her business card.

Hopefully, when it’s all over, you’ve learned more about the schools that interest you and you’re able to narrow down your choices. If you want more information, don’t hesitate to get back in touch with the admissions representatives from the schools you liked. They’ll be able to give answers to any questions you may not have had time for at the fair.
