Overview of the Program

  • The Summer Enrichment Program offers a three week intensive residential program at Daemen College located in Amherst, NY.  It features courses and lectures presented by our faculty and administrators, evening activities and weekend field trips.

Program Objectives

  • To encourage students to learn about American culture through an intensive three week seminar comprised of lectures on aspects of American history, society, government, and culture.  It will include discussions on American healthcare issues and views on medical ethics, including visits to various hospitals and clinical settings.  
  • Attend day trips to learn about and experience cultural and recreational opportunities in western New York State. These may include Niagara Falls, historic Buffalo waterfront and Erie Canal, Albright-Knox, Burchfield-Penny and other art museums, summer outdoor music festivals, ethnic festivals, theater, parks, restaurants, and a harbor boat cruise on Miss Buffalo II on Lake Erie, one of the five Great lakes.
  • To experience life in a safe residential campus setting including classes, meals, accommodations, and activities with students.  Students will be encouraged to write about their experience and observations.

Class Descriptions

  • Global Health Issues:  This course introduces some of the critical global health issues such as the disparities and burden of disease experienced around the globe, particularly by women and children, the ethical dimensions related to these disparities, and the importance of global health in the terms of development.
  • Insights into American Culture:  This course will examine the important key American symbols and icons, as well as the American concept of “individualism” in defining American culture.

Special Topic Descriptions

  • Global Health Systems: Components and Functioning of Health Systems; Quality of Care, Equity in Care, Access and Availability.
  • Culture and Global Health: The Relationship between Culture and Health, Health Beliefs, Practices, Behaviors and Behavior Change.
  • Health, Education, Poverty and the Economy:  Health Equity, Expenditures, Outcomes, Cost-effectiveness of Health Interventions and Development.
  • Women’s and Children’s Health:  Importance, Key Determinants, Burden of Health Conditions, Costs and Consequences, Addressing Future Challenges.
  • The Practice of American Healthcare: This seminar will be comprised of a series of introductions to different aspects of the American healthcare system presented by professionals in the field of Nurse Practitioner, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Medical Doctors, and representatives from the Nursing Leadership and the Nursing Palliative Care programs describing key aspects of each profession and its importance as part of a healthcare team. It is expected that visits to local hospitals along with specialized care facilities, such as Roswell Park Cancer Institute and local wound care clinics, will also be included.

Admissions Requirements

  • Completed the Summer Enrichment Program Application. All chaperons are also required to complete the application.
  • A Skype interview to determine the student's English level 
  • Official University transcripts
  • Health Insurance:  All students enrolled in the program must have comprehensive health insurance as well as proof of inoculation translated into English. Health Insurance will be provided by Daemen College, this is included in the total cost of the program.

Cost of the program

  • Total Cost is $3,500 per person.  The total cost includes, food, lodging, events, transportation during the program, seminars, and health insurance. This does not include the cost of international airfare.
  • Total Cost for chaperons is $1,800 per person.  The total cost includes, food, lodging, events, and health insurance.  Chaperons MUST complete the Summer Enrichment Application.

He majored in International Business and had an internship at Liberty Pumps, which actually turned into a job.  David has applied his knowledge and skills at national and international trips with the company.  “The internship is the main reason I got the job,” David states. “I had an opportunity to get to know the company and become familiar with what they do.
