Daemen College : Admissions : Meet our Students : Alyshia - Art Education
Alyshia - Art Education
Art Education - Transfer Student
Why did you choose your present major?
My high school art teacher was the most inspirational person in my life. She helped me not only to become a better artist but she helped me recognize what I really wanted to do with my talent.
Please describe your academic experience at Daemen College.
Professors at Daemen make learning very hands-on and involved. You learn and complete tasks you will actually need in your career. In my education classes we create lessons we can use once we begin teaching. In my Art Education class we worked on lesson plans, and then we had multiple opportunities to teach them and perfect them. The professors want to see you succeed, most have open door policies and encourage you to reach out to them for assistance in and out of the classroom.
Please describe the impact Daemen faculty, staff and advisors have had on you.
The faculty, staff and advisors at Daemen are incredible people! They take the time to get to know you, not only as a student but as a person as well. They have made my first year at Daemen unforgettable, without them it would not have been as great as it was. They provide you with opportunities you can’t get just anywhere.
Do you live on campus? Please tell us about your on campus experiences.
I do live on campus. It was the most fun and eventful year of my life. I did not live on campus my first year so this was a whole new experience for me. The friendships you build are incredibly strong and you meet people you will never forget! There is never a dull moment when you live with a bunch of your friends! Living on campus makes a much easier transfer process.
Will you please describe any internship, study abroad, service learning or academic experience? (For example, Academic Festival, Research Think Tank, etc.)
I volunteered at the education department at the Buffalo Arts Studio. I was the event planner and assistant organizer for the students in the Art Program. I worked with them to apply to a summer art program and build their portfolio. It was a great experience and allowed me to work closely with young artists.
What do you like best about Daemen College?
The endless opportunities that have been given to me in the short time I have been here! Every time I turn around there are more chances to get my name out there and get more experience in my field.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to complete my Masters here at Daemen in one year. Then I’d like to teach Art at the High school level, and after a while I’d like to go back to school to get my Doctorate in Art History.
What clubs or organizations have you been a part of here at Daemen College?
I work in Admissions, I am an Orientation Leader, I'm a member of the Student Alumni Ambassadors and I'm currently rebuilding the Art Education Club!
Do you have a favorite campus activity?
Midnight Madness! It is such a fun way to start off the semester. It really helped to loosen up and have some fun.
Why did you choose to transfer to Daemen College?
I transferred to Daemen for a million reasons but my biggest reason was the feeling I got while I was on campus. The first time I visited I took a tour and met with Joe Pagano. Joe arranged for an Art Education major to give me my tour so I could actually hear from a student in my major, it was so helpful. I thought it was great that they took the time to arrange that for me so I could hear her experiences. I made my choice in December to decide to attend Daemen in the fall. I knew that I had made the right choice when I got a card in the mail from the Art student that had given me the tour, telling me to contact her if I ever needed anything. And when Joe Pagano called me in the beginning of the semester to ask how my classes at MCC were going thus far. Everyone at Daemen is like a big family and I couldn’t wait to become a part of it!
What was your first step in beginning the transfer process once you chose Daemen?
Before I made my choice and I was just interested in Daemen, the transfer advisor and I sat down to evaluate my transfer credits. After I made my decision he helped me to apply and create my schedule.
Was the transfer admissions counselor helpful in your transfer process? If so, please explain how.
I honestly don’t know what my transfer experience would have been without the help of Joe. He made me feel like I belonged at Daemen. I probably called and emailed him a trillion times before coming to Daemen and he was always happy to help me. He goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. Even after I had transferred to Daemen and began my classes Joe took the time to help me.
How far in advance were you working with the transfer admissions counselor prior to starting at Daemen?
I began talking with the transfer advisor about 8 months before starting at Daemen.
How did you feel about the amount of credits that transferred to Daemen?
The amount of credits transferred was very important to me; I didn’t want to lose my whole first year of work. Daemen took as much as they could, and took way more than I had ever expected.
What advice would you give to any students looking to transfer?
I was not happy at my first school; it wasn’t the place for me. If you aren’t happy with where you’re attending, don’t hesitate to explore other options. When you step on campus you will know if it is right or not. I would also say transferring is not as hard as everyone says, I thought it was going to be the worst thing in the world, it was painless. I’m so glad I took that chance because I’ve never been happier!
