French Adolescent Education - Transfer Student
Why did you choose your present major?
I grew up around my French Canadian side of the family and I started learning French in my Catholic elementary school. I was fascinated by my family heritage and I enjoyed learning French so I stuck with it throughout primary and secondary school. By the end of my high school years I knew it was an important part of my life, something that I loved.
Please describe your academic experience at Daemen College.
I have had a good academic experience. I love my French classes because of the discussion involved, the group work, and the individual expression allowed in the education classes.
Please describe the impact Daemen faculty, staff and advisors have had on you.
My advisor has had the most impact on me so far. He really helped me set up my classes, transfer as many credits as possible, and boost my self-confidence in my linguistic abilities. The staff at Daemen is friendly, helpful, and ready to help you get where you need to be. I work in Academic Support Services and I see how the advisors care about each and every student that comes through their door. I have found the faculty at Daemen wants to see you succeed, and they show that in their teaching. Because it is a smaller school, and especially since I am in smaller programs, there is a lot of personal interaction. You can talk to your professor before or after class, during office hours, or by e-mail.
Will you please describe any internship, study abroad, service learning or academic experience?
I will be travelling to France this January 2012. I started by visiting the Global Programs Office, who gave me books of study abroad programs. I am fully expecting it to be the best semester of my life.
What do you like best about Daemen College?
Honestly my favorite thing is probably my French class. Aside from that, it is the relationship between me and the entire faculty and staff. They are all supportive even if they don’t see you on a regular basis or have a direct connection to your program of study. Everyone wants to see you succeed, and they want to know how we think they can better this community. They understand how much the student voice matters.
What are your plans after graduation?
I’m considering applying for a Fulbright Grant so that after graduation I might teach English in France for a year. I am considering the possibility of continuing to graduate school to acquire my master’s degree. I know I want to learn French as best as I can and teach it somewhere in New England.
Why did you choose to transfer to Daemen College?
I actually found Daemen College in a computer program as a school that fit my preference of size, cost, region and major. It was the first school I found that had French education as one major, I liked the look of the classes it had, and it is near my mom’s side of the family (not to mention Niagara Falls). I told my mom I wanted to go here, I wanted to at least visit, so we came to an open house where I fell in love. It’s such a small campus. Everyone was so nice and helpful, and I thought the head of my department was awesome. Mostly, it just felt right.
What was your first step in beginning the transfer process once you chose Daemen?
Once I visited for Open House and knew I wanted to stay, I sent in my transcripts for a credit evaluation and started the application. It was important to stay in contact with my admissions advisor to know what needed to be done.
Was the transfer admissions counselor helpful in your transfer process? If so, please explain how.
Yes; the transfer counselor was very helpful. He listened to me, explained what needed to get done and how it would work. He was there every step of the way to answer all of my questions and calm my fears.
How far in advance were you working with the transfer admissions counselor prior to starting at Daemen?
I attended my first Open House at Daemen College the October before I attended, so almost a full year before I started.
How did you feel about the amount of credits that transferred to Daemen?
I had 52 out of 54 credits transfer. My advisor was really good about fitting in extra credits due to differences between the schools so I could transfer as many as possible.
What advice would you give to any students looking to transfer?
Start the process early; make sure it’s where you want to be. Keep in contact with the advisors, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Visit the school for the Open House and the Experience Daemen Day. It really helps you get a feel for where things are, how the classes run, and what the students are like.
