Cameron - Graphic Design

Cameron Garrity

Graphic Design

It’s not often that a student requires a great art program and a great math program from his college of choice, but that was the situation Cameron Garrity found himself in during his college search. Naturally adept at math, but with a true passion for art, Cameron found Daemen’s emphasis on producing well-rounded students who are schooled in disparate subjects (such as math and art) just to his liking.

How I chose my major:

I came to Daemen planning to major in Mathematics and minor in Fine Arts.  I had always loved both subjects in high school and interested in continuing my studies in both.  However, as my second semester here progressed, I found I was enjoying my art courses so much that I had to place them as my highest priority.  I made the switch to Graphic Design and couldn't be happier!

Choosing my minor?

I came to deciding my minor because of a theater class I took with Dr. Robert Waterhouse.  I was earning class credit by working as a stage manager in the department's performance for the Academic Festival.  When an actor dropped out, I took his place in the cast.  I had a great time working on the show and thought it a great field to explore at Daemen.

Would you recommend the graphic design program to others?

Yes, I would! I love that I made a department change. It’s a really fun – but challenging – program that I can’t speak more highly of. I really enjoy it!

Do you have any advice for prospective students entering the graphic design program?

Come prepared! I took art classes all throughout high school, accumulating a strong portfolio. The background I had coming in has been very helpful, but ultimately there are some holes that need filling in.  The pace is much faster; bringing in those prior skills has been important and is helping me build a strong foundation for future semesters in the program.

What sparked your interest in studying graphic design?

Art has always been one of my favorite subjects in school; aesthetics came naturally for me and I really enjoyed the creative side of academia. I had a really great set of art teachers throughout high school who inspired me to pursue the arts in my professional career.

Why did you choose to come to Daemen?

Daemen is a place where you’ll become a well-rounded student, accumulating credits outside of your major to forge a better understanding of multiple subject matters. That may sound like the same rote answer from any student in a liberal arts program, but I have a bit more at stake. My plan coming to college was to minor in Art while at Daemen. When I made the change, the credits I accumulated in my core studies kept me from falling behind. Now I’m at the same place academically as my fellow sophomores. A strong dedication to a Core Curriculum simply isn’t something you’ll find at every institution.

What are your personal/professional goals? What would be your dream job?

I’m not positive what my career goal is at this place in time. I know it will have something to do with the art field. Graphic Designer, Illustrator, and Animator are all great possibilities for me to consider. I’m luckily in a place where I can explore all of these arts without making any ‘rash’ life decisions.

My dream job would actually be to work for the Muppets, specifically Sesame Street. I have always loved puppetry and the work of Jim Henson. The opportunity to work with such a prestigious institution would be absolutely incredible!

Are you involved in any clubs or activities on campus? What have you liked best about that activity?

I am involved in the Honors Program and Drama Club at Daemen. As a commuter, it is a challenge to make friends, but getting involved with students at different levels of their academic careers who share similar interests has been fun. Both organizations have allowed me to make great friends and incredible academic experiences. I really enjoy the work we do together.

What have you liked best about Daemen so far?

Thus far, the most important aspect for me has been the Daemen community. This is a school where your individuality will not only be appreciated but openly encouraged and viewed as a significant addition to the college as a whole.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What do you hope to have accomplished?

In ten years, I see myself doing a job I love and surrounded by close family and friends. At this point, I would like to say that I am going to be a graphic designer. However, I am not oblivious to the fact that there are other doors open for me. My ultimate goal is happiness: for myself and for those I love.

“I have always been a big advocate for justice and fairness, which is why I chose Pre-Law as my minor. Politics have also been a big part of my life. I think it’s fascinating to learn about how the government works and runs and why the officials do what they do.”
