Laura Antoine
Health Care Studies
As the Daemen College Step Team captain, Laura Antoine coordinates a weekly schedule that includes three team practices, choreographing new routines, performances at basketball games, and the occasional competition. The Brooklyn native also manages to dedicate herself to her Health Care Studies major and focus on her professional goals.
When did you join the step team? When did you become captain?
I joined the step team in my freshman year. I became captain in the 2009 fall semester. I was elected in the spring of 2009 but I assumed my position the following fall.
How often does the team practice and perform? Does the team compete, or is it just for fun?
We practice 3 times a week. We usually perform at Open House, basketball games, and any other events people ask the team to do. We compete at other schools’ events and competitions as well.
Do you choreograph the team’s performances yourself, or is it a collaborative effort?
It is always a collaborative effort on the team’s performances because it takes a lot more than one person to make a team. We work together and we create steps, routines, and themes to perform at competitions and events here at Daemen.
How do you balance your academics with your extracurricular activities?
I have been on the step team since my freshman year. I have learned that time management is key to getting anything done and having fun. I have stressed this with all of my teammates and everyone I meet who thinks they don’t have enough time to do anything.
What do you like best about the Health Care Studies program?
I love the variety of classes I get to take and the internship program I participate in while I am a senior.
Do you have any advice for prospective students entering your program?
Don’t take your major for granted. It is hard work but is very rewarding in the end. Use the learning center for any class you are having trouble in. It has helped me in the past and I highly recommend taking advantage of it. Also, keep in touch with your advisor. They help keep track of your classes, how you’re doing in them, and your future here at Daemen.
Why did you choose Daemen?
I chose Daemen because it fit my criteria for everything I wanted in a school. I wanted something small and they offered a variety of health-related programs.
What are your professional goals?
I want to work in the medical field until I retire. I love medicine, and though I don’t necessarily have what it takes to practice medicine, I’m going to help people medically in any way that I can.
What has been your favorite experience at Daemen?
My favorite experience at Daemen is Midnight Madness. Since I am a part of Daemen College Step Team we perform every year and everyone in the crowd gets really excited to see us.
What will be your lasting memory of Daemen?
My lasting memory at Daemen will be not one but one of many.
