Nick - Graphic Design

Nick Kaczmarek

Graphic Design

Nick wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to major in until he reached his senior year of high school.  It was during this time that he took graphic design classes and knew he found his niche.

Nick’s ability as an artist has flourished during his time in the graphic design program at Daemen.  He now looks forward to graduating with a degree that will allow him to either do freelance work for several companies or perhaps work for a larger company in marketing or advertising.

Would you recommend your program to others?

Absolutely!  Graphic design is gaining popularity as an occupation worldwide.  It is a great creative outlet, and will allow me to have a successful career.  In addition, I am proud to say that Daemen’s graphic design program has the reputation as one of the best in the area.

What sparked your interest in studying graphic design?

I have always liked art and knew that I wanted to major in art—I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to focus on.  For the majority of high school, I was torn between becoming an art teacher and pursuing a career in photography.  However, during my senior year I took two graphic design classes and loved them.

Do you have any advice for prospective students entering the art program?

Definitely work hard and be patient.  I recently experienced some difficulty in a drawing class I was taking.  Drawing is one of my weak subjects and I became easily frustrated with the assignments I was given.  Despite my frustration, I worked hard and just kept at it.  Now, I can definitely see improvement in my drawing technique and ability.

Why did you choose to come to Daemen?

There were many things that I liked about Daemen while visiting the campus.  First, I really liked the small size of the student body.  I knew that the classes would be more personal and I would be able to meet and interact with a lot of people.  I also liked that my program has a 90% career placement rate after graduation.  Knowing that I will likely have a job when I graduate made me feel very secure about my choice.

What are your personal/professional goals? What would be your dream job?

In terms of personal goals, I would love to leave Daemen College with a great group of friends.  I would also like all the faculty I have come in contact with to remember me in a positive light.

Professionally, I would like to work as a graphic designer, either doing freelance work for many different companies or obtaining a position in a larger company, perhaps in marketing or advertising.

I am not sure where I will end up geographically.  Part of me wants to stay and live in my hometown of Orchard Park, New York.  It is a great community to grow up in and I would love for my children to have the same opportunities that I did.  At the same time, it would be great to move to New York City to pursue a high level position at a large company.

I have two dream jobs.  First, I would love to use my degree in connection with the youth group I lead, perhaps at the corporate level.  Also, I would love to be the graphic designer for a major magazine or periodical.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities on campus? What have you liked best about that activity?

I hope to make the Daemen College step team this year.  I really enjoy the constant movement and stepping.  It keeps me in shape and is a great release of emotion.  I am also working on reviving the drama club.  I was very disappointed to learn that it didn’t have an active membership, so I found other students who were interested in participating.  We are now working on putting on our first show, which is very exciting!

Have you had an internship during your time at Daemen? If not, do you plan on completing one?

I haven’t completed an internship yet.  However, this summer I hope to obtain an internship with Rich Products in their graphic design department.  I think this would enable me to gain valuable hands-on experience in my field.

What will be your lasting memory of Daemen?

I think I will remember the friends I have made.  When I am having a hard day or trouble with my art classes, they are there to support me.  We have so much fun together and they have helped make my transition into college fluent and easy.
