Individualized Studies
Graduate 2007
I had the opportunity to study in Ireland! Dr. Murphy was instrumental in helping me to design an individualized experience. I was the only American student taking part in a wound-care initiative on how wounds heal.
This life-changing experience changed my entire perspective as to what the world has to offer. I lived with an Italian boy and 14 of his friends.
I met one of my best friends, she is from Germany. She just came to visit-we’ll be friends forever!
An Interview with Tera
What was it that said “Daemen is for me?”
I toured campus twice. People at Daemen are so helpful and enthusiastic, plus my counselor really made me feel “at ease.”
I also like the small-school atmosphere but it’s still close to a big city. (Buffalo)
Campus life…
I loved suite living… it’s a great way to meet people.
One of our favorite things to do was Open Mic night at Spot Coffee. We really like to go to Elmwood- it’s easy to get there. We either take the bus or the train. We love Starbucks too!
Why Individualized Studies?
Individualized Studies offered me the chance to create my own major with the classes I wanted to take. My interest is in Science and Health Care Communications.
What extracurricular activities were you involved in while at Daemen?
I started the dance assemble team. That was my favorite!
I was an RA for three years.
Tell me about your academic experience at Daemen?
So many of my professors were so challenging…but, willing to take you under their wing to be a better student, a better person.
My senior project with Dr. Terryberry was really rewarding. I wrote a research paper that will be used in the new edition of his text book.
Through Justine Tutuska I was asked to be the student representative on the search committee for a new member of the Health care Studies Faculty. I made phone interviews and sat in on the presentations. Great life experience.
One of my favorite things was the Service Learning component.
Justine encouraged this kind of involvement. I saw a lot of kids that need assistance. With the guidance of Justine, I ran Health Workshops for teens in the Seneca Babcock neighborhood. I did presentations on planned parenthood and health and nutrition.
I worked together with Cheryl Bird in the Service Learning department to choreograph the Seneca Babcock production of Tortilla Moon. I taught the kids Spanish style dancing for the show.
How do you feel about Deamen now that you’re graduating?
Thankful…Grateful. I feel that I am well rounded-ready to face the world.
What will you do this summer before graduate school?
Well, I am working for People’s Inc at a boys home.
I am also working with Dr. Ed Brogan on Onychomycosis research. This research studies the process of electric stimulation and how it effects tissue re-growth.
How did you get a job working with Onychomycosis?
Actually I have done this job for two years now- my professor found me…he saw my potential.
What do you want to do with your degree?
I’d like to get my Master’s in Communication, specializing in Health.
It’s important that information regarding health gets out to the general public. I’d like to help design that kind of a campaign.
And after that?
Maybe my Phd?
I would love to teach. I want to continue working in the community to promote health and wellness.
