Tyler - Political Science/Pre-Law
Political Science/Pre-Law
One day, Tyler wants to become a practicing lawyer who works to uphold the rights of the citizens of Western New York. But for the time being, he’s content with his ever-growing list of extracurricular activities. He’s the co-president of Daemen’s Pre-Law club, a Trustee scholar, an active participant in the annual MOOT Court experience, and an enthusiastic supporter of Daemen athletics through the Daemen College Blue Crew.
Recently, Tyler and the Pre-Law Club, in conjunction with the History & Government Club, organized a rally on campus to keep the New York State government from cutting TAP and higher education funding. Members of both clubs set up tables in the Wick Center to gain support from their fellow students. Over 80 students responded by sending letters to their local representative and to the leaders of the New York State legislature.
Would you recommend the political science program to others?
Absolutely. The professors and staff are wonderful and really care about your education. They allow you to completely grasp the program as a whole.
Do you have any advice for prospective students entering your program?
Make sure you’re interested in the program. I have found that being interested in what you’re studying allows you to take your education to the next level and completely grasp the ideas portrayed in the classroom. Having a natural interest for your studies also allows you to have a little more fun with your major.
Why did you choose Daemen?
I chose Daemen mainly for its smaller size and campus. I’m from a smaller town myself, and Daemen just sort of fit when I came here to visit.
What are your professional goals? What would be your dream job?
My professional goals are to graduate from Daemen and attend law school. My dream job would be to become a lawyer and help people uphold their rights and wishes in the court of law.
You are the co-president of the pre-law club. Are you involved in any other clubs or activities on campus?
I’m also involved in the History & Government Club, who works along with the Pre-Law Association. I am a member of the Daemen College Blue Crew (fan cheering section for basketball games) and the Trustee Scholars, which is a group of students who received Daemen’s top scholarship who meet with prospective scholars and Daemen faculty. I have also participated in the MOOT Court Experience every year since I have been at Daemen.
What sparked your interest in pre-law?
What sparked my interest in Pre-Law is my desire to learn more about the law and my desire to help people. Lawyers provide a service to people who need their expertise and/or assistance in court on the laws at hand. I feel being an attorney/practitioner of law is an important position that upholds the laws of our country.
What are some of the goals of the Pre-Law Club? What activities does the club have planned this year?
The goals of the Pre-Law Association are to increase campus awareness of legal, governmental, and political issues or events. Earlier this year the club held a TAP rally to help gauge support for New York State Government not to cut TAP funding. We are planning a trip in the spring semester and hope to hold some fundraising events in the spring semester also.
How you do balance your academics with all of your extracurricular activities?
I’ll admit, it can get a little stressful at times, but good time management skills are a must for any college student. I plan in advance for just about everything, and make sure I have allotted enough time for everything. For the most part I find my academics interesting and that gives me a drive to keep my grades up. Being interested and having a passion for what you’re studying makes a world of difference, and that is what allows me to balance my academics with all of my extracurricular activities.
What will be your lasting memory of Daemen?
My lasting memory of Daemen will be the great education I have received, along with the lasting contacts and friends I have created here. I’m not just getting an education at Daemen, and the friends and faculty contacts I have made here will last a lifetime.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? What do you hope to have accomplished?
In ten years I hope to see myself as a lawyer in the Buffalo/Western New York area. I hope to have graduated from both Daemen and an ABA accredited law school, obtained a law degree, and passed the BAR exam, allowing me to practice law.
