Daemen Hosts Math, Science, and Technology Summer Program for Teachers
From July 11-29, 2005, Daemen College is hosting the MST (Math, Science, and Technology) Summer Program, a three-week project aligned with the Buffalo Public Schools professional development plan. This is the sixth year that Daemen is hosting this summer education program.

The summer program provides participants the opportunity to research, design and create learning experiences for a summer service-learning project. Buffalo City School in-service teachers are assisting the pre-service teachers in the design and development of the program.

The overall goal of the program is to assist teachers in infusing equity, active learning, instructional technology, and data strategies into classroom practice at targeted high-need schools

This year's summer service project engages the Buffalo Museum of Science. The aim of the program is for elementary, middle level educators and pre-service teachers to promote teamwork through cooperative learning and creative problem solving.

"The MST summer program benefits both the Daemen students and the Buffalo public schools," states Jeffery Arnold, Director of the Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership. "It provides pre-service teachers valuable resources and ideas to assist the Buffalo public schools in their efforts to improve math and science instruction. It also has the added benefit of assisting teachers to link instruction to Buffalo's rich cultural assets."

The Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership works to ensure that educational needs are met in urban and other high-need school districts nationwide. Since it was first funded in 1999, the Daemen College-Buffalo Public Schools partnership has been working improve student math and science achievement. Each year the College applies competitively for renewal; Daemen has been granted over $642,000 for this program to date.
