Daemen College Awarded $595,199 from the U.S. Department of Education for Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs
Daemen College has been awarded $595,199 from the U.S. Department of Education for The Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs. The funding, obtained through the efforts of Representative Tom Reynolds (R-26th District), is part of the Omnibus Budget Bill approved by the House of Representatives. This is the third award to Daemen College for this program; the Center has been awarded a total of $2,513,032 to date.

The Center's goal is to improve the quality of life for those with developmental disabilities by providing needed educational and social resources, administered through a sustained program of after school mentoring, academic enrichment, and training. The Center focuses specifically on children with special needs. Daemen College graduate education students who conduct preservice hours through the Center aim to work specifically with children with special needs.

During the academic year, the Center operates four days a week from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with five partner school districts: Buffalo City, Hamburg Central, Amherst Central, Lancaster Central, and Sweet Home. The Center is also partnering with St. John's Christian Academy in the Fruit Belt neighborhood. During the summer, The Reynolds Center partners with the Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement at Daemen College to provide reading camps to children in low-income neighborhoods who are identified as having serious reading deficiencies. The Center also collaborates with The Parent Network of Western New York to offer workshops to parents and families to improve their understanding of their children's disabilities, laws and regulations, services provided, and advocacy.
