Daemen College Welcomes Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Patricia Begne
For the Academic Year 2005-2006, Dr. Patricia Begné, Professor of Law at the Universidad de Guanajuato, will be serving as a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Daemen College.

Dr. Patricia Begné brings to Daemen a wealth of experience and expertise. She is Professor of Law in the School of Law at The University of Guanajuato in Mexico, where she has taught since 1980. She has also practiced law and serves as a consultant to law firms in the U.S. Professor Begné received the Attorney at Law degree with honors from the University of Guanajunato, where she also took a postgraduate degree. She was also awarded the Outstanding Law Student of Mexico by the President of Mexico. Professor Begné has been a Visiting Professor at several university law schools in the U.S., as well as a guest lecturer in several U.S. universities, including The University of Texas at Dallas. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Residence at Penn State University in spring 2000.

During her tenure at Daemen, Patricia Begné will facilitate Daemen's efforts in internationalizing the core curriculum. One of her key roles will be to assist in expanding Daemen's existing exchange program in Mexico. In addition, she will assist in adding an international dimension to Daemen's Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement, contribute to the development of a program of studies in sustainable communities and historical and cultural preservation, as well as develop a women's studies program that has as focus on international development. In addition, she will give guest lectures in classes across different disciplines.

Denise Mills, Associate Professor of Spanish, writes, "We are fortunate to have a scholar of Prof. Begné's caliber at Daemen College. Patricia is not only an expert on law, but also on women's issues and US-Mexico relations. She has traveled extensively and brings a truly global perspective to our campus. This semester she will be visiting classes in International Business, History, Women's Studies, Medical Ethics and Spanish. She will be a great presence on campus."

The Worldwide Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program brings visiting scholars and professionals from abroad to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities for one semester or one academic year. Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence can have a significant impact on U.S. colleges and universities. In addition to teaching courses, scholars give campus-wide and community lectures, help initiate international programs and contribute to curriculum development. The program is especially appropriate for small liberal arts colleges, minority-serving institutions, and community colleges, many of which do not often have the opportunity to host visiting scholars.
