Daemen Announces New Health Care Studies Program
Daemen College has announced the accreditation of a new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Health Care Studies that offers professional training concentrations in Community Health, Complementary and Alternative Health Care Practices, and Health and Fitness Training.

The B.S. in Health Care Studies is an interdisciplinary degree program that combines contemporary studies in health-related areas with comprehensive course work in the liberal arts and behavioral, social, natural and health sciences. All levels of students can enroll this semester depending on where they want to begin in the program; freshmen and sophomore students will have the opportunity to plan their courses of study right away.

Program Goals

"Our mission is to prepare students to become knowledgeable, adaptable, reflective and service-oriented professionals," said Keith Taylor, Dean of Daemen's Division of Health and Human Services. "Our goal is to ensure that our graduates have a life-long commitment to providing a holistic approach to health care, prevention and wellness."

To ensure that the goal is met, the B.S. program provides students with a strong background in the physiological, psychological, sociological, behavioral and business aspects of the U.S. health care system. Students of the Health Care Studies program are provided with service-learning opportunities during the course of their studies in addition to a professional internship within their field of interest.

"By allowing our students to put theory into practice, they will be better prepared to meet the ever-changing demands of our health care system and the medical advances within the scientific community," Taylor added.

In addition to taking advantage of career opportunities within their area of concentration, graduates of the Health Care Studies program may pursue admission to graduate or other degree programs in many professional disciplines such as those in allied health (physical therapy, physician assistant, athletic training and occupational therapy), education, public health and business.

Areas of Concentration

Daemen's B.S. program offers three professional training concentrations that will give graduates direct access into a career field upon graduation.

Graduates of the Community Health concentration will be prepared to pursue careers in community health education programs, and staff positions within health care systems, insurance agencies, government and not-for-profit community health agencies. Individualized plans of study can lead to preparation for certification such as a Health Education Specialist. Those seeking post-graduate degrees may pursue study in public health and/or education, in addition to other health-related programs.

Daemen's Complementary and Alternative Health Care Practices concentration provides preparation for careers in consultation and program development and service delivery in a variety of areas related to complementary health care practices. Students completing the requirements for this concentration may design individual plans of study preparing them for certifications as practitioners in select practice areas.

The Health and Fitness Training concentration prepares graduates for careers in fitness and wellness consultation and development, implementation and management of programs for performance enhancement and injury and disease prevention. Individualized plans of study may lead to preparation for certifications such as Health and Fitness Instructor and/or Strength and Conditional Specialist.
