Daemen College Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement Receives
2004 School Community Partnership Award from United Neighborhoods Community Action Organization
United Neighborhoods Community Action Organization (CAO) has recognized the Daemen College Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement with a 2004 School Community Partnership Award. The award, part of the CAO annual County-Wide Neighborhood Conference in October, was given "For Outstanding Dedication to Partnering Daemen College with the Seneca Babcock Community."
The multi-year partnership between the Daemen Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement provides residents of Buffalo's Seneca Babcock neighborhood with essential services, ranging from academic tutoring, to health care clinics, to learning computer skills. Supported by a $600,000 grant from The John R. Oishei Foundation, the Daemen Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement links the core curriculum of the College, liberal education, and civic engagement with the development of practical skills. Linking service learning with the curriculum, the goal of the Center is to improve the quality of life in local communities, by preparing students to address problems that impede the development of strong, sustainable communities and neighborhoods – globally and in Western New York. The first center of community excellence was developed in the Seneca Babcock neighborhood in Buffalo, to meet pressing needs in that community.
The Daemen Center for Sustainable Communities has established a second center of community excellence on Buffalo's West Side.
