On October 27, Warsaw High School Students enrolled in Daemen College Distance Learning videoconference classes visited Daemen to meet with faculty, and to have the opportunity to attend classes on campus. The students are currently enrolled in up to three Daemen College classes in the College's Jumpstart Program. Broadband videoconference connections are provided by Daemen College and Warsaw High School with the assistance of Sharon Kaiser at Genesee Valley BOCES.
"Through a multi-year collaboration between Warsaw High School and Daemen College these talented students are earning college credit, learning about the requirements of college courses, and are getting a headstart on their college experience," stated Tony Klejna, Director of Educational Technology and Distance Learning at Daemen. "This gives participating students a chance to experience what college classes are like, and also provides them with insights on what studies they might like to pursue as college students."

The students were welcomed to the campus by Dr. Joseph Sankoh, Director of Service Learning, who discussed both learning outside of the classroom, and the American Government class he will be teaching to the Warsaw students in the spring semester.
Warsaw High School Principal Marc Czadzeck also made the trip with the students.

"We encourage students to participate in Daemen's Distance Learning Program," he noted. "This provides them with an excellent opportunity to use online-related technology as a learning tool. The program also helps each student to build individual skills, as well as confidence in learning that attending college is an attainable goal."
Warsaw teacher Tom LaDelfa, who is also a cooperative teacher with the district's Microeconomics and Government course each spring, is a longtime supporter of Warsaw's involvement with the Daemen Distance Learning Program. As a coordinator of the visit, he continues to work closely with Daemen faculty members Chris Banks, in Microeconomics, and Dr. Sankoh, in American Government.

"This is our third year with a distance learning program through Daemen," noted LaDelfa. "We have had distance learning programs preceding our connection with Daemen, as well as with other colleges. Our current program with Daemen is by far the best program with which we have been involved. Both the instruction our students have received and the technical support from Daemen have been outstanding."
He added, "Our students have received valuable experience with college instruction and have earned credit that gives them a head start when they head to college full time, after they graduate from Warsaw. We are very pleased to have been able to offer our students this learning opportunity for the past three years. Daemen has been an excellent partner for our distance learning program."

Warsaw Foreign Language Instructor Gail Stanbro is collaborating on a new Spanish course with Daemen Assistant Professor of Foreign Languages Dr. Melissa Fiori, utilizing on-line chat sessions as a technology vehicle to learn foreign language composition.
"The Distance Learning Program is an awesome educational program - one that is equally interactive and convenient," Stanbro said. "I am thrilled that my students have the opportunity to be involved with this technological innovation."

After students attended classes on campus, Daemen Director of Undergraduate Admissions Donna Shaffner provided an overview of both the college admissions process and the educational opportunities at Daemen.
"The educational partnership we have with Warsaw High School is important to Daemen," she pointed out. "Through our Distance Learning Program, we have the opportunity to educate some of the brightest high school students throughout the region. Our faculty and staff thoroughly enjoy meeting these talented students personally. Our hope is that we'll see many of these students on the Daemen campus, as freshmen, next fall."
The Warsaw students were then joined by Daemen students on a tour of the campus that included a visit to Daemen's new student residence units, and then joined the campus community for lunch in the Wick Center.
The visit to Daemen College was coordinated by Cheryl Littlejohn, Daemen's Distance Learning Coordinator.
