Daemen Names Elizabeth A. Schaffstall Director of New Health Care Studies Program
Daemen College has named Elizabeth A. Schaffstall Director of its Health Care Studies Program. Most recently, she founded and was sole proprietor of the Willow Creek Holistic Health Center in West Seneca. Schaffstall holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of Business Administration, with concentrations in accounting and health care administration. Both degrees are from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
This fall, Daemen announced the accreditation of a new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Health Care Studies, offering professional training concentrations in community health, complementary and alternative health care practices, and health and fitness training. The Daemen College B.S. in Health Care Studies is an interdisciplinary degree program that combines contemporary studies in health-related areas with comprehensive course work in the liberal arts and behavioral, social, natural and health sciences.
“Our mission is to prepare students to become knowledgeable, adaptable, reflective and service-oriented professionals,” said Keith Taylor, Dean of Daemen’s Division of Health and Human Services. “Our goal is to ensure that our graduates have a life-long commitment to providing a holistic approach to health care, prevention and wellness. Elizabeth's unique blend of talents and tremendous enthusiasm make her the ideal person to implement this innovative new program at Daemen.”
As founder of the Willow Creek Holistic Health Center, Schaffstall recruited, hired, and managed a staff of professionals, who provided services including yoga, massage, reflexology, meditation, Reiki, and life coaching. Prior to this, as a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's tax management team, Schaffstall conducted seminars with 100+ participants across the United States on stock option and retirement planning, tax legislation, and insurance and investment planning. She also provided financial and tax planning to key corporate executives, high net worth individuals, and owners of closely held businesses.
In addition to taking advantage of career opportunities within their area of concentration, graduates of the Daemen College Health Care Studies Program may pursue admission to graduate or other degree programs in many professional disciplines, such as those in allied health (physical therapy, physician assistant, athletic training and occupational therapy); education; public health; and business.
By offering three professional training concentrations, the Daemen Health Care Studies Program will give graduates direct access into a career field upon completion of the program. In community health, graduates will be prepared to pursue careers in community health education programs, and staff positions within health care systems, insurance agencies, government, and not-for-profit community health agencies. Graduates of the complementary and alternative health care practices concentration will be prepared for careers in consultation and program development, and service delivery in a variety of related areas.
Those completing the health and fitness training concentration will be prepared for careers in fitness and wellness consultation and development; implementation and management of programs for performance enhancement; and injury and disease prevention. Additionally, individualized plans of study may lead to preparation for certifications such as health and fitness instructor and/or strength and conditional specialist.
All levels of students can enroll for the spring, 2003 semester, depending on where they want to begin in the program; freshmen and sophomore students will have the opportunity to plan their courses of study right away.
