Daemen Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Approved by
New York State Education Department
The Daemen College Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (tDPT) has been approved by the New York State Education Department. Licensed Physical Therapists, interested in enhancing their education, clinical competence, and clinical degree are now able to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree at Daemen. The tDPT Program will be offered in an accelerated fashion for those therapists interested in completing their degree in less than one year; the degree may also be pursued over several semesters.
Daemen College is the first small private college in New York State to offer the degree, and third school in New York State to be awarded the program. New York University and State University of New York at Stony Brook also offer the DPT degree.
Michael S. Brogan PT, associate professor of physical therapy and chair of the Daemen College Physical Therapy Department noted, "The Doctor of Physical Therapy degree realizes many of the profession's goals in the coming decades, including raising clinical competence consistent with evidence-based practice, such as in the professions of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary, optometry, and podiatry. This represents an important piece of the future of the physical therapy profession."
During the Physical Therapy National Conference in Indianapolis, 2000, the American Physical Therapy Association House of Delegates endorsed a professional position -- APTA Vision Statement for Physical Therapy 2020 -- which views the profession of physical therapy, twenty years in the future, provided by physical therapists who are doctors of physical therapy -- DPT.
