Daemen to Provide Books for Students in Buffalo's Seneca Babcock Neighborhood Through Support From The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation
|
This week, Daemen College, together with The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, will make a donation of new books to the students of Southside Elementary School. The presentation will take place Thursday, May 6, at 9 a.m., at Southside Elementary. Daemen College Education Department Chair Dr. Pat Hartwick will make the presentation to Southside Elementary School Principal Teresa Schuta. The books, purchased through a $2000 grant from The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, will enrich tutorial activities that link Daemen student-tutors to teachers and students at Southside Elementary in the city's Seneca Babcock neighborhood. Daemen College students and teachers provide direct after school services to residents of the Seneca Babcock neighborhood. Currently there are four community agencies in the neighborhood offering places for young people to go after school. During these hours, Daemen students tutor young people in all four agencies and offer mentored activities for personal growth. These agencies now share tutorial activities and link Daemen student-tutors to teachers in public school classrooms at Southside Elementary School. The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to Building a Better Buffalo. Since 1981, the foundation has worked to foster a better quality of life in Buffalo and the Western New York region, through active support of public, educational, charitable and benevolent organizations and activities.
