Depression is often a very isolating experience even when the depressed person has a supportive and loving group of people to rely on.
Those words are from Buffalo attorney Dan Lukasik, who has been a practicing lawyer for the past 20 years and has suffered from depression for the past ten years. A highly successful lawyer, with a long list of awards and professional accomplishments, Lukasik has dedicated himself to helping others understand and cope with depression. He is the founder of the website and blog www.lawyerswithdepression.com, and speaks and writes frequently locally, statewide and nationally on the topic of managing your life while coping with depression.
Daniel Lukasik will speak at Daemen College at 7:00 p.m. on September 27, 2010, in Wick Center on the Daemen campus, 4380 Main Street, in Amherst. Lukasik’s talk, “A Conversation About Depression,” is co-sponsored by Daemen College and Compeer of Greater Buffalo. It will be free and open to the public.
Immediately following the event, Lukasik, who also serves on the Compeer Board of Directors, will join a panel comprised of mental health professionals, consumers, and advocates in an hour-long question-and-answer period. Light refreshments will be available free of charge.
Compeer of Greater Buffalo, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, began with the inspired belief that friendship is powerful medicine. Serving Buffalo and all of Erie County, Compeer matches volunteers and mentors in one-to-one friendship and
mentoring relationships with children, adults and seniors striving for good mental health.
Our mission is to use the power of volunteer friends to improve the lives of children and adults who are striving for good mental health, notes Compeer of Greater Buffalo Executive Director Michele Brown. Volunteers make a significant and proven impact upon the lives of the individual they befriend. The consistent, caring relationships formed between volunteers and their friends foster a sense of belonging, trust, and self-esteem in the people referred to the program.
Lukasik graduated from Buffalo State in 1984 with highest honors. He put himself through law school at the University at Buffalo, graduating in 1988.
This year, he was named to The Best Lawyers of America list, and named as one of the top plaintiff’s personal injury attorneys in Upstate New York by Super Lawyers. Lukasik was also named to the Who’s Who list by Buffalo Law Journal as one of the top personal injury attorneys in Buffalo, and the Million Dollar Advocates Forum.
He received the New York State Bar Associations Merit Award for Public Service, and the Distinguished Alumni Award for Public Service from the University at Buffalo Law Schools Alumni Association. Lukasik is also the recipient of the Special Service Award from the Erie County Bar Association.
