One of many exciting changes underway in the Buffalo City School District is the search for a new superintendent. Critical to the selection process is support of the entire community, and recognition of Buffalo City School District stakeholders.

With this in mind, Say Yes to Education is launching the Letters to the Superintendent Book Project. Earlier, focus group participants throughout the City provided passionate and reasoned comments about their wishes for the new Superintendent and his or her leadership of the schools. This letter extends an invitation to other community stakeholders to share their comments as well. They include parents, grandparents, students, immigrant and refugee families, and others. The goal is to reach as many Buffalo Public Schools stakeholders as possible, especially those rarely heard from.

We believe that all of these comments should be documented and preserved in book form so that a broad array of stakeholders can see their contribution to this process in the first book written by stakeholders in the Buffalo Public Schools.

Upon completion, Letters to the Superintendent: Buffalo Public Schools in the Twenty First Century will be presented to the new superintendent so that he/she can also experience and understand the sentiments of the community.

Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram, Dr.P.H., Ph.D., is the CEO of Jehudi Educational Services, an educational consulting firm operating from Buffalo, New York. Jehudi Educational Services provides a broad spectrum of educational consultation in public education.

Dr. Bertram is devoted to public education and has a distinguished record of advocacy for parents of children in Buffalo Public Schools, where she has chaired and served on numerous district wide committees. She was also co-director of a leading parent group, Concerned Parents and Citizens for Quality Education. She is, in addition, Adjunct Faculty at University at Buffalo
and Buffalo State College.

Together with Barbara Nevergold, Dr. Betram is co-editor of Go, Tell Michelle (State University of New York Press, January 2009), an anthology of very personal letters and poems, written by African American women from all ages and walks of life, from all over the globe.

Barbara Nevergold and Dr. Bertram, co-founders of Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women, Inc., came up with the idea of getting career women to express their thoughts in form of letters to the First Lady. The letters in the book, a best-seller, speak to a strong sisterhood felt by the women with the First Lady, confess often very private fears and dreams, and acknowledge and remember the generations before who endured so much for so long.
