The Daemen College Accounting/MIS Department has been awarded a mini grant from the Western New York Service Learning Coalition (WNYSLC) to help establish an accounting lab for community organizations. The lab will be under the direction of Daemen Professor of Accounting and MIS Department Chair Dr. Linda Kuechler, PhD, CPA, CMA.
The focus of the accounting lab for community organizations will be to assist a wide range of organizations. In one example, Daemen College Junior and Senior accounting students will be trained in business planning, budgeting, and using Quick Books software, training which will then enable them to assist local community organizations such as the WNY Peace Center.
The accounting lab will provide the students with the opportunity to network, gain real accounting experience, and build solid resumes before graduation. Another significant point in creating the lab is that it will also contribute to the mission of the community organization by allowing them more time to do the actual work they were established to accomplish. It is the goal of the accounting lab to broaden its purpose to help prospective entrepreneurs and small businesses by providing these same services free of charge.
Additionally, one group that the lab will specifically serve are veterans who may have ideas for entrepreneurial activities, but could use some help in the planning stages. As part of its effort to assist all veterans of U.S. military service in obtaining an education – with a focus on those returning from active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan – Daemen College and the Erie County Veterans Service Agency have signed an agreement, connecting the Erie County Veterans Office with Daemen. The agreement designates Daemen College as a military friendly campus, assisting veterans in applying benefits received through the G.I. Bill. In addition, linking the services of the accounting lab will enable Daemen to further assist local veterans in moving forward, with plans to create or strengthen a business of their own.
