Daemen Awarded $2000 from the Virginia Evans Devereux Memorial Fund
The Virginia Evans Devereux Memorial Fund has granted $2000 to The Center for Sustainable Communities & Civic Engagement at Daemen College and CASH--Creating Assets, Savings and Hope—formerly known as the Economic Self-Sufficiency Coalition for a collaborative project called “Income TAXi.”
The mobile assistance unit is used to reach a target audience of low- to moderate-income families and individuals for a variety of purposes. These include: providing free tax preparation, financial literacy, and asset building opportunities to persons with limited opportunity to access community-based programs (due to transportation, child care, or other issues); conducting financial literacy training using computerized training work stations, especially, with youth populations and at community organization programs; and assisting with reading and math skill training for elementary school age children.
The “Income TAXi” visits local community centers; after-school programs; employers of low-income individuals; libraries; faith-based organizations; and financial institutions, such as credit unions.
The mission of the Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement is to partner Daemen College and its students with communities to promote civic responsibility, leading to communities that are healthy, safe and vital, and will remain so for future generations. CASH includes over fifty organizations working to help low-income families and individuals move to greater financial stability.
