Daemen College has been awarded a grant of $2,610 from The Dollar General Literacy Foundation. The grant will be used to assist children attending The Aloma D. Johnson Fruit Belt Community Charter School who struggle with reading.
Specifically, the grant will be used to purchase ONfinity, a portable, interactive whiteboard system that instantly transforms any flat surface into a touch screen. Lessons using ONfinity offer children the opportunity to use many of their senses, including visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. One accessory that will also be purchased is an interactive “Dance Mat”. This tool will allow the children to dance their responses to academic questions.
Elizabeth Wright, Executive Director of the Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs at Daemen College said, “The ONfinity is a great learning tool. There is evidence that children, especially those with learning disabilities, remember information better when it is presented using multi-sensory methods, such as an electronic white board. We are grateful to Dollar General for providing this valuable learning resource to assist children.”
Sharon G. Thomas, President of the Board of Trustees of the Aloma D. Johnson Charter Fruit Belt Community Charter School said, “The Board of Trustees is grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for this grant. Our students are very excited and anxious to put the ONfinity interactive whiteboard system to good use.”
Daemen College helped to establish The Aloma D. Johnson Fruit Belt Community Charter School and serves on the Board of the School. The Reynolds Center for Special Education and After-School Programs was established in 2003 to expand Daemen’s outreach to students with learning disabilities and to prepare future special education teachers.
