Daemen Awarded Second Grant for Climate Change Education Project

Brenda Young, Associate Professor of Natural Sciences at Daemen College, has been awarded a second Red, White, and Green grant of $500 for a project that will engage Daemen students with youth in the Fruit Belt to promote environmentally-friendly activities. The Red, White and Green grant is administered by Youth Service America and funded by Civil Society Institute, and supports youth service projects that address climate change issues. This round of grants supports projects to be completed around Global Youth Service Day (April 25-27).

With this grant, Daemen students will engage in an environmental service project called Bulb Bonanza. Daemen students will work with youth in the Fruit Belt neighborhood to distribute energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs to residents and to plant community beds with flower bulbs. The project will take place on Friday, April 25th from 2:30-6:00 p.m. in the Fruit Belt community. Residents will also be given pamphlets, created by Daemen students, with energy-saving tips. Youth completing the program will earn the Environment Super Hero title and receive recognition.

With support from the first Red, White, and Green Grant, Daemen students met with youth in the Seneca Babcock after-school program over a period of six weeks in the fall of 2007? The college students and youth prepared informational packets on recycling and home energy efficiency and distributed energy efficient light bulbs and environmental education packets to 80 neighborhood residents. Youth attended the Step It Up Rally which aimed to focus attention on climate change. Several petitions were circulated as part of the rally to encourage local elected officials to support green jobs locally. The rally was attended by the mayor and several state legislators. Invitations were sent to politicians at the national level and some of their aides attended the rally. Additional spring activities took place in conjunction with Focus the Nation on January 31, 2008. This national day of focus on climate change involved activities on our college campus as well as other sites around Buffalo.
