Scholars Day at Daemen College recognizes academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to community service, and offers prospective students the opportunity to compete for six Trustee Scholarships – the College’s most prestigious academic scholarship awards. During this year’s event, held February 6, more than 200 top students competed for the College’s top academic scholarship awards.

On Scholar’s Day, Chris Johnson, a Daemen Trustee Scholar and senior sport management major from Fulton, NY, spoke to the group of high school seniors and their parents at Daemen about the many opportunities open to Trustee Scholars. A member of the men's soccer team and president of the Sport Management Club, Chris has been inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta National Business Honor Society. In addition, he is an active participant in Mock Trial and plans to attend law school after graduation.

Daemen College Trustee Scholars have diverse backgrounds, educational goals, and perspectives, and while those selected for this award are nominated on the basis of academic achievement, non-academic factors are also important in the deliberations of the Selection Committee.

Each student applying for admission to Daemen is considered for a merit scholarship, but only those who are nominated are invited to apply for the Trustee Scholarships. Considerations of both intellect and character are made in selecting individuals who will “make a difference” not only in their careers and community, but in the community of Daemen College as well.

“Daemen College feels that Scholars need opportunities to learn without the pressure of financial concerns,” noted Daemen President Dr. Martin J. Anisman. “Trustee Scholarships offer this opportunity to all types of people – those from diverse backgrounds and experiences as well as from all socio-economic circumstances. We seek students who are able, curious, and disciplined; students with vision and the enthusiasm to breathe life into their dreams.”

Daemen College Trustee Scholarship candidates combine the following qualities: academic achievement; vision for self and society; enthusiasm, inspiration -- the ability to bring visions and dreams to life; academic and personal discipline which motivates him/her to persist; and leadership ability.

For students interested in the Daemen College Trustee Scholar awards, the first step is to be accepted at Daemen. Eligible prospective first year students are then invited by the President of Daemen College to apply for one of the prestigious awards. Students are nominated on the basis of their high school GPA and SAT or ACT test scores. They must complete a Scholars Day application by late January and interview on campus during Scholar's Day, in early February.

Six scholarship recipients are selected each year in the following categories:
two recipients receive full tuition; four additional students receive $15,000 awards. All Daemen College Trustee Scholarships are for tuition only; they are renewable for four years as long as each recipient is enrolled at Daemen College full time and maintains a 3.0 GPA. The award will be extended for those majors requiring 5 or 6 years to complete i.e. Accounting; Athletic Training; Physical Therapy; and Physician Assistant.
