Daemen College is offering a new Bachelor of Arts in History major. Students enrolled in the new History major will be prepared for a wide variety of options: Graduates can pursue careers in education (teaching or administration); library or archival science; museum/historical society work; law; government and community agencies; and an available specialization in environmental studies, among many other options.
What Makes it Great:
You’ll work directly with faculty members, not teaching assistants, committed to teaching excellence and preparing you for your future. The History track provides for a strong liberal arts preparation involving an intensive study of history. Required courses will give you a broad exposure to US, European and Non-Western History. Course requirements emphasize the development of skills in demand in the workplace and in graduate studies, including the ability to analyze complex material and support your arguments; strong research and writing skills; and strong presentation skills.
A capstone thesis requirement gives students the opportunity to bring together their acquired knowledge and these skills.
Internships, Cooperative Learning Experiences and Study Abroad:
The B.A. in History degree offers internships, cooperative learning experiences and study abroad; both programs stress preparation for your future. All students are strongly encouraged to do an internship or cooperative learning experience: The department will work closely with you and the Cooperative Education and Career Development Office to develop an appropriate experience. A variety of opportunities are available, from local organizations, to internships in Albany or Washington, to international experiences. The department will work with you and the Global Programs Office to explore opportunities to complete academic requirements abroad.
Additional Opportunities:
The B.A. in History major includes minors available in political science; criminal
justice; pre-law; public history; public administration; black studies; women’s studies; Atlantic studies; and international studies. Course requirements for many of these minors are, in part, the same as major requirements, offering an opportunity to complete a minor, which can assist in career and graduate school options, with little additional work.
Your Future:
Depending on the opportunities you’ve taken advantage of in the department, and your interest in furthering your studies, you’ll be prepared for a wide variety of options. Graduates pursue careers in education (teaching or administration), library or archival science, museum/historical society work, law, government and community agencies and many others.
