Daemen College Will Receive $438,973 Through the Higher Education Capital (HE Cap) Matching Grants Program

Funds to Equip the College’s New Research & Information Commons

Daemen College will receive $438,973 through The Higher Education Capital (HE Cap) Matching Grants Program.  The Daemen funds were among 48 capital projects approved by the Higher Education Capital Matching Grants Program Board at their August 6, 2009 meeting in Albany. The HE Cap Program was created by a vote of the New York State Legislature, approved by the Governor, and funded by bonds issued by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).

“Daemen College is grateful to Governor Paterson and our representatives in the New York State Legislature, State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer (R-61st District), and Assemblyman Jim Hayes (R- 148th District), for their support of Daemen College,” said Daemen President Dr. Martin J. Anisman. “These funds will equip the new Daemen Research & Information Commons, a facility which will benefit not only Daemen students, but the Western New York community, for many years to come.”

The Daemen College Research & Information Commons (RIC) is built with "green" design features – to conserve energy, water, and other resources; maximize the use of recycled materials; and minimize the use of toxic materials. Conceived and designed as an integrated building system incorporating environmentally friendly design features, the RIC is among the first free-standing “green” buildings on a Western New York college campus; Silver LEED Certification – Leadership in Environmental Engineering and Design – is pending. The RIC will also function as a core component of the College’s Environmental Studies Program.

HE Cap funds are allocated to participating campuses according to a unique formula that considers campus size, and the family income of the student enrollment at each institution. This distribution recognizes the important role that private colleges and universities play in providing higher education access to low and moderate-income students.

Daemen College enrolls over 2200 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Most Daemen students (76%) come from a radius of 100 miles or less of the City of Buffalo.  The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement conducted at Daemen confirmed that 50% of freshmen are first-generation college students. Additionally, over ninety-five percent of Daemen students receive financial aid.

Daemen President Dr. Martin J. Anisman noted, “Daemen College takes pride in its role as an affordable private College which serves a large population of low to moderate income students.  The College strives to ensure that New York State residents, particularly in our region, have access to higher educational opportunities and academic support.  The Research & Information Commons houses the Daemen library, as well as the Learning Center and Office of Academic Advisement – all of which are key supports for ensuring student success.”

For every $1 in state matching funds, New York State independent colleges and universities must provide $3 in support of their projects. Daemen College will augment its award by providing $1.3 million in matching funds, made possible in part through support from the College’s capital campaign “Anthologies:  The Campaign for Daemen.”

The New York State Governor’s Office and the State Legislature cite the statewide benefits achieved by leveraging private investment with public dollars; HE Cap will stimulate short-term and long-term economic growth in communities throughout the state. By approving $58 million in funding for capital projects totaling more than $540 million, the HE Cap Board will create more than 7,000 jobs (construction and related industry jobs) and leverage more than $9 in campus funding for every $1 in state capital dollars.
