Daemen Bachelor of Fine Arts graphic design major Juan Esquerra won first place in the Don Nichols Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the Ad Club of Buffalo. The $1,000 award was given for a poster Juan completed in Daemen Visual & Performing Arts Professor Kevin Kegler’s advanced typography class.

“Juan has been a great student and a talented addition to the Daemen Community,” said Kegler.

“He has a strong sense of design, and uses the power of visual communication to help solve social, political, and environmental problems.”

Juan noted the inspiration for his poster came from his roots as a Latin American, and the reasons why he chose to leave Bogota, Colombia four years ago to study graphic design at Daemen College.

“The changes between the two countries have been dramatic and difficult to understand, but the lessons and experiences I have had have influenced who I am and much of my design and photography,” said Juan.

“I wanted to relate the poster to my experiences and also focus on my Latin American roots and my life experiences in two different countries.”
