Daemen College now offers a unique Visual Effects Certificate Training Program to help students enter the growing visual effects/post production industry workforce in Western New York.  The Daemen program is the first program of its kind in New York State and one of the only visual effects training programs in the nation.

Daemen President Gary A. Olson said:  ‘Our outstanding Visual and Performing Arts leaders have developed this Visual Effects Certificate Training program to provide Buffalo and other students in the region, with a fast, comprehensive pathway into high-paying jobs in the emerging visual effects and animation industry right here in Buffalo.

“We are confident that this program will help attract new and existing visual effects, animation, and post production companies to locate businesses in Buffalo and hire the workers trained through the Daemen Visual Effects Certificate Training program.”

The Visual Effects Certificate Training Program is open to students with two year Associate Degrees in technology and other fields, who hope to enter the visual effects industry, and is offered only through Daemen College in partnership with its International Center for Excellence in Animation (ICEA).

In addition, Empire Visual Effects, a new post production, visual effects and animation company will be established at the landmark Tri-Main Center in Buffalo. Empire Visual Effects, which will partner with Daemen College, has pledged to create 150 new visual effects and other post production jobs within five years – jobs that will pave the way for the creation of a new post production and visual effects industry in Western New York. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo awarded the company and Daemen College a $4.5 million capital grant to facilitate the project.

Dr. Laura Sommer, Chair of the Daemen College Visual and Performing Arts Program said:  “The visual effects program will be truly transformational and will produce precisely the kind of skilled workforce that is sought by post production companies here in Buffalo and throughout the United States.

“Through new articulation agreements with our community college partners in the region, the Daemen College Visual Effects Certificate Training program will provide the cornerstone for new visual effects and post production jobs here in Buffalo.  We are delighted to be working directly with private sector studios to help make this vision a reality, starting this summer.”

The Daemen College/ICEA leadership has entered into agreements with Monroe Community College, Niagara County Community College, Erie County Community College, Broome Community College, and other community colleges to facilitate access to students with an Associate’s degree and an interest in the Visual Effects Certificate Training Program.  Daemen and the ICEA also intends to engage ITT Tech; the Arts and Technology Center that is under development with support from the Oishei Foundation; and Technology Charter Schools, including the Charter High School for Applied Technologies, to help direct students through the community colleges and into the Visual Effects workforce training program at Daemen.

Students interested in the Visual Effects Certificate Training Program should contact Dr. Laura Sommer, Chair of the Daemen College Department of Visual & Performing Arts, at (716) 839-8359, or lsommer@daemen.edu.
