The Daemen College Nursing Department has received $18,000 in grant funding from the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York. The three-year grant will enable the Daemen Nursing Program to provide scholarships to two students in their final year of the Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) Program, with the goal of encouraging emphasis in geriatric care through clinical experience.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students,” noted Daemen Professor of Nursing and Department chair Mary Lou Rusin. “We are very grateful to the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York for their support of our program.

“The Daemen Adult Nurse Practitioner program leads to an M.S. degree. This new scholarship funding will provide opportunities for our ANP final year students to gain critical insights into providing an enhanced living experience for geriatric patients, many of whom bring special challenges for care, such as acute and chronic illnesses. It is important for Adult Nurse Practitioners to have the ability to create a supportive, caring environment that enhances each client’s dignity and acknowledges his or her strengths.”

The Daemen College Adult Nurse Practitioner Degree focuses on the health and illness experiences of clients from a variety of familial-socio-cultural backgrounds. Students use applicable research and theory to assist clients in changing modifiable risk factors, and synthesize information from a variety of disciplines to develop differential diagnostic and treatment strategies for clients with common, acute, and/or chronic illnesses.

In addition, students in the ANP Program:

*  Work to enhance the lived experience for clients with acute illnesses, clients with

chronic illnesses, and clients who are dying.
*  Provide therapeutic interventions and regimens that incorporate an understanding of

the clients needs and desires, while considering multiple systems variables and the

impact of these variables on treatment options (e.g. treatment efficacy, cost factors,

   and safety issues).
* Work collaboratively with other health care team members in providing care for clients

   with complex health care needs.
*  Monitor the quality of health care provided to clients in a variety of settings.
*  Incorporate professional, legal, moral, and ethical standards into practice.
*  Critically analyze and synthesize research to determine applicability to clinical

    practice.
*  Develop a research project or thesis pertinent to advanced nursing practice.
*  Contribute to professional nursing through advanced nursing practice and professional

    involvement.
