For the 2013 tax season, Daemen College provided free income tax preparation to 396 individuals, for a refund total of approximately $261,000. Financial information was also made available on educational programs, buying homes, credit issues and problems, managing student loans, and more.
Tax assistance -- with a special focus on veterans and their families -- was provided by Daemen accounting students at 20 locations, including six sites sponsored by Erie County legislators and one by the Erie County Controller’s office.
A tax assistance event, along with a Veterans Financial Fair, also took place Saturday, March 23, 2013, on the Daemen campus in Amherst (free income tax preparation was available to veterans and members of the general public with incomes of $51,000 or less, filing a standard deduction or schedules A and B).
Tax preparation was sponsored by C.A.S.H. of the United Way, the Daemen College Center for Sustainable Communities & Civic Engagement, the Daemen Office of Veterans and Veteran Family Affairs, and the Daemen College Accounting Department.
Daemen College accounting students also prepared taxes at several organizations whose clients are physically and/or mentally disabled. In addition, the College has provided tax services at locations including the Zoar Valley Clinic in Gowanda, the Restoration Society in Buffalo, the Independent Living Center, and other rural areas.
