Daemen Again Among Colleges Chosen by Colleges of Distinction
June 1, 2012
Daemen College is again among the institutions chosen by Colleges of Distinction as among institutions nationally recognized by educational professionals for excellence, strongly focused on teaching undergraduates, and home to a wide variety of innovative learning experiences.
Colleges of Distinction is a college guide with a unique approach: To provide students, counselors, and parents with information about schools that excel in key areas. Colleges and universities are nominated for participation in Colleges of Distinction by high school college counselors. Additional information is then gleaned from college admission experts around the country, and combined with interviews of staff and faculty at each accepted college.
Colleges are selected based on four distinctions:
The college attracts students who have a healthy range of academic and non-academic interests, and demonstrates a tangible commitment to keeping them interested and involved in their education. Innovation combined with "hands-on" learning techniques is encouraged. These may range from fieldwork and internships abroad to service learning and advanced research at home.
The college encourages faculty to be great teachers, not just researchers or consultants. It makes little or no use of graduate student "teaching assistants" and keeps classes small, so that students are always people, never numbers, to their professors. The college also encourages new and innovative curricula and offers a number of special programs, giving students up-to-date choices in their education.
The college is an interesting and exciting residential community, offering many opportunities for co-curricular involvement and leadership development. These can include athletics, drama, hobbies, music, politics, religious life, service, and more.
The college has an excellent placement record for employment and advanced study. Alumni rank themselves extremely satisfied with their college experiences and tend to stay involved in the school long after graduation.
