AMHERST, N.Y. – Daemen College President Gary A. Olson will confer degrees to nearly 910 undergraduates and graduates in the Class of 2014 at the college’s 63rd annual commencement ceremony taking place at 2:30 p.m. May 17 in Kleinhans Music Hall.

John Catsimatidis, a self-made billionaire and chairman/CEO of the Red Apple Group, which is ranked by Forbes as one of the largest private companies in the country, will deliver the 2014 commencement address. He will also receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the college at the ceremony.

Catsimatidis oversees holdings in oil refining, retail petroleum products, convenience stores, real estate, aviation, and supermarkets with investments in both medical and industrial technology. His companies post annual sales of approximately $5 billion. With more than 8,000 employees, he is a major employer in the New York metropolitan area and upstate New York.

During Daemen’s commencement ceremony, top awards that will be presented to graduates will include the:

  • President’s Award – recognizes an undergraduate student who has exhibited dedication, care and concern for their fellow students.
  • Mary Angela Canavan Award – recognizes an undergraduate student who has made significant contributions to the betterment of student life at the college.
  • Alumni Senior Award – recognizes an undergraduate student who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the larger community.
  • Charles Lumsden Award – the most prestigious academic award, which is presented to the student with the highest GPA throughout their undergraduate years.
