The Daemen College Nursing Department has been awarded a competitive grant of $10,000 from the Health Foundation of Western and Central New York (formerly the Community Health Foundation).

This grant will support enhancing nursing advance care planning and geriatric care rotation development.

The goals of the program are twofold: to educate nurse practitioner students on advance directives as a tool in end of life care and allow them to apply this knowledge to patient situations in clinical practice; and to educate nurse practitioner students on the topic of dementia, the use of the mini-mental exam, and implications in the use of the tool and management of dementia in geriatric patients.

“The focus of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner program is on individual health care management of a particular patient,” said Daemen Assistant Professor of Nursing Diane Ryan. “Activities and experiences are designed to enhance nurse practitioner skills with the geriatric patient.”

Christine Klotz, program officer at the Foundation, noted that $18,000 in scholarship funding from the Foundation for nursing scholarships has also been renewed again for another three years.

“Daemen and Diane Ryan have been extraordinarily good stewards of this funding.  I  supported their application, knowing that they would do an excellent job of administering this grant.”

Daemen Assistant Professor of Nursing Virginia Hart, and Daemen Professor of Nursing and Department Chair Dr. Mary Lou Rusin also developed the application.

“What is particularly exciting about this grant is the opportunity for Daemen's nursing faculty to participate in various leadership and professional development activities with the Foundation staff, subject matter experts, and other grantees,” said Rusin. “We fully anticipate strong interest by students in this program, and look forward to participating with the Health Foundation of Western and Central New York in investing in an elder-competent workforce.”
