Daemen College has announced that the Inauguration of its fifth President, Dr. Edwin Clausen, will take place 4:30 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2011, on the front lawn of the College, 4380 Main Street, Amherst. A reception will immediately follow the ceremonies.
Dr. Clausen, former Daemen College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, assumed the Presidency on June 3 of this year.
Dr. Clausen joined Daemen in spring, 2000, coming from Arizona International College of the University of Arizona. He holds a Ph.D. in modern Chinese history, and a Master’s degree, also in history, from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Clausen also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, in history, from the University of California, Riverside.
In January, Dr. Clausen was among Western New York community leaders honored by the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York for 2011. Dr. Clausen was selected for his contributions to the progress of education in the region.
The National Federation also recognized Dr. Clausen for designing and implementing the Daemen College Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement, with a grant he received from The John R. Oishei Foundation. Since its inception, the Center has collaborated with City of Buffalo neighborhoods in Seneca Babcock, the West Side, and the Fruit Belt, bringing about improvements in nutrition, health care, and education; helping to create economic self-sufficiency; and building environmental awareness.
Dr. Clausen has been instrumental in the development of infrastructure and new academic programs at Daemen. This includes the Research & Information Commons, which opened in January, 2009, and incorporates state-of-the-art environmental design and has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with a Gold LEED Certification. With the strong support of the Western New York Congressional delegation, Dr. Clausen also provided the inspiration and the funding opportunities for development of the Thomas Reynolds Center for Special Education, the advanced research done by the Daemen/UB/Roswell research team, and for various green initiatives on campus.
Dr. Clausen has provided funding and leadership for the globalization of Daemen, including its industry partnership through the International Center for Excellence in Animation and the forthcoming Daemen College Visual and Performing Arts Center. Dr. Clausen also organized the Western New York Service Learning Coalition and the WNY Council of Vice Presidents.
