Daemen College, which recently established the Daemen Center for Veterans and Veteran Family Services, is listed in the latest issue of Military Advanced Education magazine’s 2012-2013 “Top Military Friendly Colleges” list. The listing encompasses colleges and universities from across the nation.
This is the third straight year Daemen has been selected as a Military Friendly School by Military Advanced Education magazine.
Through its Veterans’ Center, Daemen has created a comprehensive program designed to provide aid and assistance to veterans seeking a degree from Daemen College. The College has, also, signed an agreement connecting Daemen with the Erie County Veterans Service Agency, to provide assistance to veterans interested in applying educational benefits available to them through the G.I. Bill.
“Career and educational assistance is a vital part of transition for younger veterans,” noted Col Walter O. Gordon, director of the Daemen Center for Veterans and Veteran Family Services. “Employment statistics show that Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans have an unemployment rate of approximately 11.5 percent, compared to a national 9.5 percent rate, which is already very high.
“Our goal is to fulfill our duty to these veterans and their families by opening more doors to higher education and training opportunities, and thereby helping to prepare more of our recent veterans for the jobs of the future. We will do this, in part, by welcoming veterans to Daemen College, and also by promoting changes to improve and expand benefits, such as increasing access to scholarship funds, simplifying tuition, and expanding benefits for on-the-job and apprenticeship training to veterans seeking a college education.”
